GOSHEN – Seven was a good number Thursday night for coach Matt Thacker and the Warsaw Tigers.

In the boys track and field sectional at Goshen High School’s Foreman Field, the Tigers won the evening’s final event – the 4x400 – to claim the sectional championship by a margin of seven points and extend their title streak to seven years.

Warsaw, leading sectional runner-up Goshen by three points heading into the last race, finished the evening with 101 team points, followed in the top five by Goshen (94), Elkhart Central (78), Northridge (78) and Concord (51).

“When you’re in the middle of a streak, the goal is not to focus on them, but to focus on the next challenge,” Thacker said of continuing the streak of championships, all of which came under his guidance. “We take a one-day-at-a-time approach, because if we don’t the entire thing can consume everything about us, and that’s not healthy.

“Our hats off to Goshen, Elkhart Central and Northridge ... all three teams competed at a high level, and we had just enough. Our entire conference is amazing and provides for great competition, which helps us all as we move forward in the tournament. Anytime you’re able to come out on top in our conference or sectional, it’s a great feeling and a great accomplishment for our athletes and coaches.”

Fairfield finished sixth in the 12-team field with 48 points, followed by NorthWood (43.5), Columbia City (38), Jimtown (29), Elkhart Memorial (26), Elkhart Christian Academy (19.5) and Wawasee (18).

The top three finishers in each event advance to Thursday’s Kokomo Regional.

Luke Griner won the 800 in a time of 1:58.15 and was the lone Wawasee competitor to advance to the regional.

Griner was the top seed in the event, but because of a timing error wasn’t announced in the top eight finishers. Wawasee coach Scott Lancaster approached officials and the problem was corrected.

The Tigers won three events and will be represented at the regional in six events total.

Tristan Larsh won the 200-meter dash in 22.79 seconds, while Zeb Hernandez was the winner in the 1,600 with a time of 4:32.33.

The 4x100 squad of Rane Kilburn, Will McGarvey, Alijah Wade and Larsh crossed the line in a winning time of 42.63 seconds, tying the school record.

The 4x400 squad of Kilburn, D’Andre Street, Ridley Lemon and Wade secured the sectional title with a first-place time of 3:27.28.

Northridge finished second in the 4x400 with a time of 3:27.62.

Second-place finishers for the Tigers included Dalton Smoker (shot put, 49-3), Hernandez (3,200, 9:53.41) and Larsh (100, 11.28).

Kilburn advanced in the 100 with a third-place time of 11.29 seconds.
