Depth Pushes Lady Tigers To 11th Straight Title

The key to winning big meets, said Warsaw track and field coach Matt Thacker, is being able to score points with two participants in an event.

In other words, depth.

The Lady Tigers’ depth was on full display Tuesday evening, as they won just two of the 16 events but scored 132.5 points and cruised to their 11th straight sectional championship.

By comparison, Concord won three events, but was a distant second with 88 team points.

Elkhart Memorial and Columbia City also won three events, but finished third and fourth, respectively, with 69 and 67 points.

“You have to score two if you’re gonna win a big meet,” said Thacker. “You have to have depth, and you have to score two in as many events as possible.

“When you get a fifth-place in the 100 hurdles like we did tonight with Sadie Lemon, that’s huge. When you get a third-place in the shot put like we did with Page Desenberg, and she was seeded fifth, that’s huge. In the long jump, Kendall Menzie getting fourth and possibly getting a call (to participate in the regional), that’s huge because in long jump you’re just a step away from scoring points and possibly advancing to the state meet from the regional.

“You want to score as many points as possible. It’s just like any competition. We were able to do that, and fortunately we had the most points in the end.”

Elkhart Central finished fifth in the team standings with 60 points, followed by Wawasee (45.5), Northridge (42), Goshen (37), Fairfield (31), NorthWood (29), Jimtown (13), Elkhart Christian Academy (7) and Bethany Christian (3).

The top three finishers in each event qualified for the regional, which will be held Tuesday at South Bend St. Joe.

The Lady Tigers will be represented at the regional in 10 events, unless others get calls to fill spots, while Wawasee advanced in four events.

Winners for the Lady Tigers included Mia Beckham in the 800 (5:02.64) and the 4x400 relay team of Maygan Bellamy, Angie Sanchez-Vijil, Kenzie Martz and Remi Beckham (4:02.82).

The Lady Tigers’ 4x800 relay team of Sanchez-Vigil, Remi Beckham, Emma Bohnenkamper and Dayton Groninger finished second in 9:42.06. The quartet of Shunterra Davis, Bellamy, Abbi Curtis and Makayla Clampitt ran a runner-up time of 49.86 seconds in the 4x100.

Other second-place finishes came from Bellamy in the 400 (1:00.13), Mia Beckham in the 3,200 (11:33.23) and Alexi Day in the high jump (5-5).

Third-place finishers for Warsaw were Anna Craig (800, 1600), Curtis (200) and Desenberg (shot put).

The top eight finishers in each event earn points, with the winner scoring 10 and eighth place receiving one point.

The Lady Tigers amassed 132.5 points because, on top of the regional qualifiers, they were able to score with a second competitor in a number of events.

Warsaw tallied four fourth-place finishes, four fifths, a sixth and three seventh-place finishes.

“It’s just a team effort,” said Thacker. “(Assistant) Coach (Troy) Furnivall talked about competing, and we went out and did that. I’m very happy with our effort. We’d like to get more through, just to give you more of an opportunity at the regional. This really is the last team meet, and now it’s that cliche of survive and advance.”

For Wawasee, Hannah-Marie Lamle advanced in three events, while Alexis Manges qualified for the regional with a second-place distance of 119-8 in the discus.

Lamle won the long jump with a leap of 16-5.5, was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.49 seconds, and was third in the 300 hurdles in 49.47 seconds.

Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
