Sanders, 69, died Sunday, one week after suffering a heart attack.
On Monday night, Warsaw City Council honored Sanders with a moment of silence and words of praise were offered by Mayor Joe Thallemer.
At the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting today, numerous officials offered their personal remembrances.
Thallemer, who often attends county commissioners meetings, reiterated his thoughts, saying he considered him a friend and appreciated the working relationship they shared.
Each of the commissioners offered their thoughts.
Commissioner Bob Conley said he turned to Sanders when he decided to run for office and appreciated his insights.
“In doing so, it’s been a tremendous blessing,” Conley said.
Commissioner Brad Jackson said their friendship dated back several decades ago to a time when they worked together through the Kosciusko County Builders Association.
“He’ll be missed,” Jackson said.
Commissioner Ron Truex added, “I certainly enjoyed working with him. He certainly had the county’s best interest at heart. It’s going to be tough for the county to replace him on council.”
Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine recalled his bone-crushing handshake and smile.
County Councilman Ernie Wiggins, who was appointed to the post last year, credited Sanders with urging him to seek the post.
Mike Ragan, the county Republican chairman, said Monday they would wait until after Sanders’ services to announce plans for a caucus that will be used to appoint his replacement.
Funeral arrangements were announced Monday. Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Warsaw Community Church in Warsaw.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon, a daughter and two sons.
