Lady Tigers Perfect In Opening Round Of NLC Tourney
Host Warsaw won all five of its matches in the opening round of the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Tennis Tournament Wednesday.
The No. 1 doubles team of Athena Schlitt and Collette Smith won 6-0, 6-1 over Northridge’s Jordan Kauffman and Kylee Bontrager. They will play Wawasee’s Kabrea Rostochak and Kendra Doerr, who were 6-2, 6-2 winners over Goshen seniors Claire Penner and Elise Loop Liechty, in today’s semifinals.
In the lone upset of the first round, Warsaw sophomores Rachel Boyle and Amy Herendeen beat No. 4 seed Courtney Larson and Taylor Mock of Wawasee 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. The Lady Tiger duo plays top-seeded Allison Murphy and Megan Godzisz of Concord in the semis today.
Liza Lewis beat Northridge’s Taylor Sellers 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and will take on top-seeded Krystal Grubb of Elkhart Memorial in today’s semifinal round. Second-seeded Ella Knight won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3 over Wawasee’s Peyton Rookstool. Knight will take on third-seeded Erin Hunter of Plymouth in the semis.
At. No. 3 singles, Lady Tiger freshman Alyssa Zellers is the top seed, and she beat Memorial’s Megan Huys 6-1, 6-2 Wednesday. Zellers will play Hannah Walter of NorthWood today.
Wawasee finished the opening round 1-4 and will look to do some damage in the consolation rounds. The championship matches are scheduled for Friday.
Triton Opens HNAC Tourney With Three Wins
KNOX – Triton opened play in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference Girls Tennis Tournament with three wins Wednesday.
Kolbie Mason needed three sets to beat Deanna Yetsko of North Judson 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Quinn Downing advanced at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over LaVille’s Emily Cole.
At No. 1 doubles, Emma Ross and Hannah Wanemacher won 6-0, 6-0 over Ashlyn Householder and Izzy Didonna of North Judson.
The tourney semifinals are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today.
Apaches Trim Vikings
AKRON – Wabash scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings on its way to a 6-2 Three Rivers Conference baseball win over Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday.
Next up for Valley is the Culver Academies Tournament on Saturday.
Whitko Sweeps Valley
AKRON – Whitko won each match in straight sets, taking a 5-0 Three Rivers Conference girls tennis win over host Tippecanoe Valley Wednesday.
Morgan Keirn, Delaney Keirn and Jackie Werstler won in singles play for the Lady Wildcats. Gracie and Jessica Hook won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Jenna VanCuren and Manon Sonneville needed a first-set tiebreaker in their win at No. 2 singles.
Both teams have conference matches today. Whitko will host Peru, and Valley travels to Southwood.
Lady Squires Beat Peru
NORTH MANCHESTER – Sweeping both doubles matches and winning at No. 3 singles, Manchester beat Peru 3-2 in a Three Rivers Conference girls tennis match Wednesday.
Bethany Collette and Lauren Metzger won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, as did the No. 2 doubles duo of Kendra Auler and Elizabeth Anguilm.
Lydia Little won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Sisters Karly and Kelsey Eichenauer each fell in three sets in the top two singles positions.
The Lady Squire junior varsity won all six matches.
Manchester (9-3, 6-1 TRC) wraps up regular season play Monday, hosting Southwood.
Wildcats Overtake Zebras
ROCHESTER – Whitko’s Alex Bechtold and Zach Hewitt homered, and Drew Bradford struck out 13 Rochester hitters in the Wildcats’ 8-2 Three Rivers Conference baseball win over the host Zebras Wednesday.
Landen Goff, Alex Robbins, Bradford and Hewitt had doubles for Whitko, with Goff and Bradford scoring two runs each. Whitko scored in every inning but the fifth.
The Wildcats improved to 18-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference. They will play at Peru on Monday.
Warriors Drop Two
MIDDLEBURY – After falling to Northridge 15-8 in 11 innings to complete a suspended game, Wawasee dropped an 8-1 decision to the Raiders in Northern Lakes Conference baseball Wednesday.
The suspended game was picked up with the teams tied 6-6 after nine innings. Both teams scored twice in the 10th before the Raiders, aided by Warrior errors, pushed seven runs across the plate in the 11th frame.
The full game was tied 1-1 after three innings. Northridge scored once in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth frame to secure the win. Wawasee was held to three singles in the contest.
Northridge won the junior varsity game 14-6 over the Warriors.
Wawasee (8-12 overall, 4-7 in the NLC) hosts Plymouth Friday.
Knights Edge Squires
WABASH – Manchester’s Kane Gable drove in the lone Squire run in a 2-1 Three Rivers Conference baseball loss at Southwood Wednesday.
David McAtee, Hunter Boughman and Grant Strobel also had hits for Manchester.
The Squires (10-7, 4-3 TRC) host Heritage in a non-conference game Friday.
Lady Vikings Win Big
AKRON – Freshman Ally Betten hit a grand slam, and Alex Gomez homered in Tippecanoe Valley’s 13-0, five-inning softball win over Three Rivers Conference foe Wabash Wednesday.
The Lady Vikings expanded on a 1-0 lead with eight runs in the third inning. A four-run fourth brought the run-rule into play.
Senior Abby Betten had three hits, and every Lady Viking to come to the plate collected at least one hit. All but one scored at least once.
Sydney Howard faced 18 hitters, striking out six in five innings and was the winning pitcher.
Valley travels to Marion for a non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. today.
Manchester Wins Big
WABASH – Emma West had four hits, with Sydney Day and Mackenzie Day adding two hits each to the Manchester attack in its 8-0 Three Rivers Conference softball win at Southwood Wednesday.
Kennedy Fierstos drove in two runs for the Lady Squires. Mattie McKee pitched a complete game, striking out eight Lady Knight hitters.
Manchester is now 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the TRC. The Lady Squires will host Homestead in a non-conference game today.
Lady ‘Cats Win In 8th
ROCHESTER – Anna Ousley doubled in the top of the eighth inning for Whitko and scored on Ellie Snep’s sacrifice fly to give the Wildcats a 3-2 Three Rivers Conference softball win over Rochester Wednesday.
Reannon Hopkins had a double and a single for Whitko, with Emalee Duggins, Kristina Slater and Riley Insley collecting a hit each.
Whitko will play a non-conference game at Columbia City Friday.
Squire Golf Beats Rochester, Southwood
WABASH – Harley Kruschwitz and Nathan Self each shot 37 to tie for medalist honors at Honeywell Golf Course Wednesday, leading Manchester to Three Rivers Conference golf wins over Rochester and host Southwood. Manchester finished with a 168 to Southwood’s 175 and Rochester’s 179.
Parker Wagoner had a 45, Konrad Borgmann a 49 and Mathias McLaughlin posted a 56 for the Squires.
Klayton Hendrix shot a 46 in junior varsity play, and Dylan Brubaker had a 53.
Manchester next plays in the TRC Tournament Saturday at Rozella Ford in Warsaw.
