During its meeting Monday, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board recognized four long-time teachers who are retiring at the end of the school year.

Brenda Vanlaningham, kindergarten teacher at Mentone Elementary, has been in education for 37-1/2 years, 28 of them with Tippecanoe Valley. She moved to Mentone in 1988 and started as a substitute. In 1989, she was hired at Burket and then transferred to Mentone Elementary in 1990.

Superintendent Brett Boggs read a statement from Vanlaningham saying, “Teaching in the lower grades, the growth from the beginning of the year to the end of the year is tremendous.”

She plans to help in her husband’s business and continue to take mission trips in the future.

Vanlaningham said, “Working at Mentone Elementary has been a privilege.”

Kim Eisner is retiring as a first-grade teacher at Mentone Elementary after 35 years at Tippecanoe Valley. She also served as a volleyball and track coach, ticket taker for TVHS athletic events, and as an announcer for girl’s softball for two years.

She is considering substitute teaching in the future.

Boggs read her words saying, “It has been a delight to see my kids turn into parents and have their children in class.”

Retiring language arts teacher at TVHS Lois Ann Buss has spent 37 of her 38 years teaching career at Tippecanoe Valley. She has taught French, Spanish and English as well as serving in extracurricular activities including cheerleading, Sunshine Society, French Club, FCA and junior class sponsor.

Boggs read her thoughts on her career saying, “The most rewarding aspect of teaching is being in the presence of youth, hope and the future every day.”

Buss will begin teaching French at Grace College in the fall.

Doug Heinold, industrial technology and Project Lead the Way teacher at TVHS, started at TVSC in 1985. During his time teaching, he coached football, baseball and wrestling. He was named assistant athletic director in 2003 and held that position until 2013.

Boggs shared Heinold’s words, saying, “I have worked with a lot of great people from administrators to students during my time here. I hope that I will never forget all of the good times that I have had from the classroom to the field.”

He plans to use his acquired skills, especially computer drafting a robotics, after retirement.

Warsaw Gets Past Goshen On Penalty Kicks, Advances
A September match between the Warsaw and Goshen girls soccer teams resulted in a 1-1 tie after a hard-fought match. Tuesday night, the two teams met for a second time on a much bigger stage: the opening round of the 3A girls soccer sectional tournament at Elkhart High School. With a winner having to emerge this time around, it came down to penalty kicks, with the Lady Tigers winning 5-3 after a 0-0 tie.
