Free Comic Book Day Is Saturday

Tomorrow is the first Saturday of May, which means a summer blockbuster based on a comic book has been released and Free Comic Book Day.

The big summer movie released this year on the first weekend in May is “Guardians of the Galaxy 2,” while Chimp’s Comix & Video Games, 919 E. Winona Ave., Suite 4-6, Warsaw, is hosting Free Comic Book Day for the 15th year. Free Comic Book Day started in 2002, with Chimp’s participation beginning in 2003.

Free Comic Book Day promotes reading and comic books.

For just walking into Chimp’s, a person can get two free comics. Additional comics are available to those who donate a nonperishable food item. For every item donated, they will receive a free comic. One copy of each comic is permitted.

Donations go to the Salvation Army. In 2016, the store collected 1,289 non-perishable food items on Free Comic Book Day for the food pantry.

“As always, we’re hoping to top that number this year,” said Chimp’s owner Nick Kelley.

Some of the free comics highlighted this year, according to Kelley, include “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Marvel has a book out for a summer crossover titled “Secret Empire,” and DC Comics is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Wonder Woman with Wonder Woman No. 1 from DC Rebirth.

Kelley explained the DC Rebirth by saying it’s “a retooling of the DC Universe with new jumping-on points for readers.” DC also is offering “Superhero Girls” comic geared toward younger females.

Outside DC and Marvel comics, Kelley said the all-ages comics include “Barbie,” “Monster High,” “Descendants,” “Animal Jam,” “The Loud House” and “Spongebob.”

Older readers may enjoy “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Riverdale” based on the CW television show, “Legends of Zelda,” “Street Fighter,” “Rick & Morty” and “Avatar.”

“One comic I expect to go quickly is ‘I Hate Image,’ which is a spoof of Image comics by Image,” Kelley said. “Their top-selling comic is ‘The Walking Dead,’ which is parodied in it.”

Fifty-seven books have been added to Free Comic Book Day this year, he said. “As always, we will be bringing back some returning favorites. A number of those are yet to be determined by Saturday, and all will be posted on our Facebook,” he said. The store’s Facebook page can be found under Chimp’s Comix.

Chimp’s also will be having a sale Saturday. Some of the specials include 35 percent off back issues, 25 percent off graphic novels, 20 percent off complete runs/series, 25 percent off select statues and buy one select toy and get one 50 percent off.

“We also will be having raffle tickets included with the purchase in-store of $5 or more,” Kelley said.
