Fort Wayne Canterbury, however, outshined them all, as the Cavaliers fired a four-man score of 298 at Rozella Ford on a cold, windy and overcast day that also saw rain at times.
The host Warsaw Tigers were second with a 313, followed in the top five by Plymouth (317), NorthWood (320) and Lake Central (325).
Warsaw’s JV team carded a 344 and finished sixth, while the rest of the field included Rochester (347), Wawasee (356) and Triton (362).
“Canterbury, to break 300 on a day like today is absolutely fabulous,” said first-year Warsaw coach Rich Haddad. “Par 70 times four, that’s 280. For them to be 18 shots over as a team in these conditions, that’s really strong. For their No. 1 to shoot a 69, that’s a fantastic round of golf.”
Canterbury’s Michael Brothers carded a 1-under 69 to earn medalist honors, while the rest of the Cavaliers’ winning lineup included Carson Stohler (73), Camdyn Cobler (77) and Cam Krueger (79).
Warsaw’s runner-up score of 313 included Tim Rata’s 75, Sam Yeager’s 78, Tommy Meier’s 79 and Luke Delp’s 81. Luke Johnson rounded out the Tigers’ varsity squad with an 83.
Haddad has been looking for consistency out of his lineup from top to bottom. He was pleased with Tuesday’s results, particularly in the dreary conditions.
“A 313 on a day that it didn’t hit 50 degrees, and it was really windy and spitting rain, great score today,” said Haddad. “It was a tough day to stay focused and not get discouraged from both the weather and the conditions.
“I’m really proud of the boys, they all played solid golf. They didn’t play their best, some of them, but they hung in there and put a good score on the card, even if they didn’t feel like they played great.
“We got a great round today from Tim Rata, who shot a 75, his best round of the year. He really had a breakout day today.”
The Warsaw JV team’s sixth-place finish was fueled by Jacob LaLonde’s 78. The rest of the squad included Chase Byron (81), Zach LaLonde (85), Cole Voss (100) and Lucas Rhodes (104).
“Our JV team played today too, and we got really good play from the top three,” said Haddad. “They had really good days today, both Zach and Jacob LaLonde, and Chase Byron. All three of those guys showed a lot more consistency, which is what we need.”
The Wawasee Warriors, whose lineup included two freshmen, two sophomores and a senior, were led by Zach Leedy’s round of 80.
Dillon Drake carded an 87 for Wawasee, while Evan Dippon shot 93, Cameron Brill 96 and Jared Krugman 104.
“Zach, a freshman, played pretty well,” said Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone. “The conditions were tough. He had a few holes he’d like to have back.
“Dillon shot 87, he went 44-43. He played pretty well. And I really thought Evan played well. He shot 93 ... that score for a freshman isn’t bad here, especially on a day like today.”
Beau Hepler paced Triton with an 86.
The rest of the Trojans’ lineup included Ross Johnson (91), Braden Kreft (92), Isaac Wall (93) and Chase Butler (96).
Warsaw and Wawasee will tee off against each other again Tuesday at Stonehenge in the first match of Northern Lakes Conference play.
