Sturtsman Tosses 1-Hitter In Season Opener
By Staff Report-
In the season-opening baseball game for the Squires, a 2-0 win over the visiting Generals, Beck hit a two-run single in the second inning that plated teammates Koehl Fluke, who was pinch running for Sturtsman, and Mason Meyer.
Sturtsman, who reached base with a walk in the second inning, handled the rest as he gave up just one hit and struck out 13 Wayne batters in seven innings of work.
Sturtsman retired the first 14 batters he faced, and Drake Jones’ two-out single in the fifth inning was the only thing between Sturtsman and a perfect game.
“Not too bad for the first game,” said veteran Manchester coach Jack Rupley. “Hayes threw really well ... 81 pitches in seven innings, great pitch economy.”
Meyer and Hunter Boughman both had singles off the Generals, who have been outscored 10-0 in their first two games.
Manchester is scheduled to host Wawasee today at 5 p.m.
