Snep had to wait while the game was delayed a half hour, waiting for the Lady Lakers to arrive from LaGrange. But once she entered the circle, she retired the first nine hitter she faced.
Whitko scored all of its runs in the bottom of the third. Senior centerfielder Riley Insley led off with a walk, and scored on Anna Ousley’s double to left-center field. Emalee Duggins followed with a double to the right-center gap to drive in Ousley.
After Duggins stole third, she scored on Snep’s groundout to second.
Snep’s first rough spot came in the fourth inning, when she walked Kylee Palmer to open the inning. Palmer was caught stealing, which loomed big when Snep walked Alexis Snyder on five pitches. The Whitko hurler settled down and got a pair of grounders to retire the side.
Lakeland’s first hit didn’t come until there were two out in the sixth, when Palmer beat out a squibber down the first-base line. The Lady Lakers started a seventh-inning rally when pitcher Elise Edwards doubled and scored on an error by Kennedy Krull.
Whitko coach Michele Garr called a conference with the team in the circle to help the Lady ‘Cats regain their poise.
“I told all of them to relax, that this wasn’t the time to tighten up,” she said. “I told them to stay calm, that we still had the lead.”
Krull handled a grounder flawlessly for the first out in the inning, and Snep struck out the last two hitters to end the game. She finished with eight strikeouts against the two walks and two hits she surrendered.
“I was really happy with her, especially being the first game and the weather being cool,” Garr said. “When she was in trouble, she did a very nice job of getting herself back out.”
Whitko’s offense showed some early-season rust as well, managing just four hits in the game. but Garr pointed out most of the Lady Cats’ workouts have been indoors so far this season.
“I think we need a little bit more B.P., ” she said. “We’ve had a lot of tee work, and we’ll definitely be getting more live pitching in as the weather gets warmer.”
Whitko plays again today, hosting Churubusco in a 5 p.m. contest that was originally set for Wednesday.
