Warsaw Community High School’s gymnasium will get a new name.
The gym will be called Tiger Den TCU Court, after a naming rights agreement with Teachers Credit Union was approved by the school board Monday night.
The board approved the plan 6-0 with board member Jeremy Mullins absent.
The agreement is for 10 years.
Teachers Credit Union will pay $300,000 for the naming rights. It also will provide services such as guaranteed interest rates. In total, the deal is worth around $1 million, according to Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert.
Revenue from the agreement will support WCS’s mission “to inspire and equip all students to acquire and apply knowledge and skills while pursuing their dreams and enriching the lives of others,” according to a news release from WCS.
“Warsaw has a proud history of athletic and academic excellence and Teachers Credit Union is excited to serve and contribute to the area’s rich traditions and wide variety of victories,” said Paul Marsh, TCU CEO, in a statement.
In addition to naming the gym, the Warsaw Area Career Center recently registered with TCU’s financial empowerment program. The program is a free curriculum that engages students with a financial literacy program aimed at teaching students to make smart financial decisions, the release states.
The agreement was part of WCS’s strategic plan, which includes building community relationships.
“This expanded collaboration with TCU increases efficiencies in operations and allows the district to leverage its resources as we continue to provide an excellent educational experience for our children and community,” said Heather Reichenbach, school board president.
The Tiger Den seats 4,704 people and ranks in the top third of Indiana’s high school gyms as far as size.
Prior to the start of 2016-17 school year, WCS entered into an 10-year agreement with Lutheran Health Network. The hospital paid $1 million for new turf on the high school’s football field and the track was resurfaced. Lutheran’s logo also was placed on the field.
In other business, the board:
• Approved to award the bid for the cafeteria projects at Harrison and Eisenhower Elementary Schools to Shawnee Construction.
The project will expand space in the schools’ cafeterias this summer. The cost is $1.217 million and will be paid for by refinancing a bond.
• Shelley Wilfong was hired as chief analytics officer beginning May 1. Wilfong, Goshen, is currently an assistant principial at Northridge High School, Middlebury.
• Phil Kuhn was hired as the interim director of the WCHS Performing Arts Center. Kuhn will be responsible for booking shows and doing marketing for the center.
Hoffert said the interim will be removed in 90 days as long as both parties find it a good fit.
Kuhn was previously the news director at NewsNowWarsaw 1480.
