MISHAWAKA – Five home runs from Grace College’s baseball team highlighted the Lancers’ 12-2 win at Crossroads League rival Bethel College on Monday.
Xavier Harris launched three homers and finished with six RBIs, and Jamar Bray launched two more home runs with another six RBIs.
The sophomore duo’s big day led the Lancers to 12 runs on 11 hits in the league opener for both teams.
Scottie Clark took care of the rest from the mound, going seven innings and allowing two runs to get the win. Aaron Voirol came in and pitched a clean inning of relief in the eighth to finish off the Pilots (9-2, 0-1 CL).
Harris and Bray were swinging dangerous bats from the onset of Monday’s game. Cameron Maxwell singled in the top of the first, and Harris homered to left. Chase Baker reached base next, and Bray parked a two-run shot to right field for a four-run inning.
Bethel threatened in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs and loading the bases with two outs. But Clark got the final batter to fly out to keep Grace ahead.
The Lancers (9-8-1, 1-0 CL) made Bethel pay in the top of the third. Grace loaded the bases with two walks and a single from Austin Baker, and Bray hit a grand slam on a 2-0 count.
Neither team could plate a run over the next two innings, but Harris got the action going again in the sixth. Maxwell walked, and Harris hit his second homer on the next at-bat.
The situation was replicated in the eighth inning as Harris hit his third two-run homer of the day to bring in Maxwell.
Harris ended the game 3 for 4 with four runs and six RBIs, and Bray was 2 for 4 with two runs and six RBIs.
Maxwell finished the day with three runs and two walks, and Jason Stevens had two hits and a stolen base.
Chase Baker was 1 for 3 with two runs and two walks, and Hunter Ackerman and Austin Baker each had a hit and a steal.
The Lancers are back in league action today, playing at St. Francis at 1 p.m. Grace ends the week at home against Indiana Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday.
