Ellis Is Headliner For Blues & BBQ Concert July 7

The country and class rock concert headliners will be announced April 3 by radio station WRSW 107.3.
Blues & BBQ activities start at 6 p.m., with an opening act to be determined.
Ellis, a “legendary blues guitarist with roots in southern soul music,” performs at 8 p.m., according to information provided by Wieringa.
Earlier in the meeting, Mayor Joe Thallemer said, “I’m going to plug that Blues & BBQ concert. It is by far, the best. It is a great concert. I think this year we’re going to potentially do something a little bit different and try to get more people down there because it’s a great show.”
Ellis was born in Atlanta in 1957, grew up in southern Florida and first played guitar at age 8. He found the blues through the back door of British Invasion bands like The Yardbirds, The Animals, Cream and The Rolling Stones.
His love for the blues solidified when he was 14. At a B.B. King performance, Tinsley sat mesmerized in the front row, according to the information provided. When B.B. broke a string on Lucille, he changed it without missing a beat, and handed the broken string to Ellis. Tinsley’s fate was sealed; he had to become a blues guitarist.
Averaging over 150 shows a year, Ellis has played in all 50 states, as well as Canada, Europe, Australia and South America.
Ellis has shared the stage with Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy, The Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic, Bob Margolin, Cedric Burnside, Koko Taylor, Willie Dixon and Albert Collins.

The board approved a contract with the booking agent, Crossover Touring, for Ellis to perform as the Blues & BBQ concert headliner for $5,000. Wieringa told the board she was in negotiations for another act for that concert and still working on getting sponsors for the concert.
In other business, the Board of Works approved:
• A contract with Brian Fraval, doing business as Pro Audio Service, for production work for the classic rock concert at Glover Pavilion June 16 as requested by the Warsaw Parks and Recreation Department. Cost is $3,900. Production includes the sound system, stage lighting and spot lights.
• A contract with Fraval for production work for the Blues & BBQ concert at Glover Pavilion July 7. Cost is $750.
• A contract with Fraval for production work for the country concert at Glover Pavilion July 21. Cost is $3,900.
• A contract with Mischell Productions Inc. for two rock acts to perform June 16. Cost is $13,000.
• A contract with Mischell Productions Inc. for two national country acts to perform July 21 for a cost of $40,000.
Grants help cover the cost of the concerts.
Wieringa said the bands for the country and rock concerts will be announced April 3 because the Parks and Recreation Department has a partnership with WRSW, which has a hand in selecting the performers. The radio station will announce the performers April 3 as a marketing tool, Thallemer said.
