WINONA LAKE – The NCCAA National Championships started on a sour note Wednesday for Grace College’s women’s basketball team.
The sixth-seeded Lady Lancers (15-19) fell 73-53 to third-seeded Emmanuel in the opening round of the national tournament.
The 16-team tournament – 8 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams – is being held at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center and runs through Saturday.
The loss sends Grace to the consolation bracket of the tournament. The Lady Lancers were slated to play Bluefield College in the consolation bracket today at 1:45 p.m.
As a team, Grace struggled on the offensive end. The Lady Lancers combined to shoot 25 percent in each half and were 2 of 18 (11 percent) from the three-point line.
In the first quarter, Darian Patton was an instrumental figure for Grace. The senior scored seven of Grace’s 10 points, but the Lions (16-12) still led 17-10.
Emmanuel looked to pull away in the second quarter. The Lions unleashed an 18-2 run to blow open a 35-18 lead with 2:27 to play in the half.
Grace fought back into contention with a late surge. Vironnica Drake put up four quick points, and Kelsie Peterson hit a free throw in the final seconds to cut Emmanuel’s margin to 35-25 at halftime.
The third quarter virtually ended the game, as Emmanuel outscored Grace 20-8. The Lions opened up a 22-point lead by the end of the period, and Emmanuel cruised to victory in the fourth.
Drake and Patton scored 12 points each to lead Grace, and Peterson added eight points and four boards.
Pam Miller chipped in with six points and five rebounds, and Chloe Pridgen tallied four points and four boards.
Emmanuel had four players score in double figures in the 20-point win – Mikayla Trombley (18), Taylor Delasbour (14), Timia Reynolds (11) and Elise Coberly (11).

GREENVILLE 78, SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN 73
In the first women’s game of the day, fourth-seeded Greenville College defeated Southwestern Christian University 78-73.
Laura Goodnight made 8 of 13 shot attempts and led Greenville 23 points and six rebounds. Taylor Paulin and Wesley Woodard finished with 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.
SCU’s Eliora Johnson turned in an impressive individual performance in the loss, finishing with 28 points, 11 boards, two assists and a pair of steals. Maranda Janz chipped in with 18 points.

ROBERTS WESLEYAN 108, CROWLEY’S RIDGE 63
Roberts Wesleyan entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, and rightfully so.
The Redhawks had six players score in double figures as they opened play with an impressive 108-63 win over eighth-seeded Crowley’s Ridge.
Emily Miller led the way with 19 points and 10 boards, while Kindsay Brandt and Necedah James chipped in with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
Taya Andrews (16), Sara Nady (14) and Lucy Covley (11) rounded out Roberts Wesleyan’s list of double-figure scorers.
Emily Eaker led Crowley’s Ridge with 17 points, while Chelsie Spence and Hannah Willard scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the loss.

MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN 69, BLUEFIELD COLLEGE 59
Led by Mykayla Flores, second-seeded Mid-America Christian beat No. 7 seed Bluefield College 69-59.
Flores scored 19 points to go along with nine assists, six rebounds and six steals.
Jamie Lamb and D’Shalla Powell scored 10 points each in the win, and Sarai Rodriguez chipped in with nine points, four boards, four steals and a pair of assists.
Whitney Smith led Bluefield with 14 points, while teammates Adrianne Goodlet (12), Courtney Kendrick (11) and Danae Cox (10) also scored in double figures.
