Women’s Soccer Draws With Nicaragua National Team
By Josh Neuhart-
The Lady Lancers, near the end of their weeklong mission trip to the country, used two goals from Liz Van Wormer to produce a memorable draw.
Grace outshot Nicaragua 10-7 in the match with both sides taking two shots on goal.
Nicaragua scored first in the 18th minute, netting from the right side.
Van Wormer scored her first goal to tie the game in the 23rd minute. Corinne Villalobos broke free from the midfield and was taken down. Van Wormer stepped up and drilled the 30-yard free kick past Nicaragua’s goalkeeper.
Ten minutes later, Grace took the lead. The Lady Lancers earned another free kick just outside the penalty box. Van Wormer bent in her second free kick of the match with a vicious swerve.
Grace held a 2-1 lead into halftime, and the Lady Lancers maintained that lead through much of the second half.
Nicaragua managed to scrape out a draw by scoring with just two minutes left in regulation.
“This was a great experience on numerous levels for our program. It was an honor to be treated so well from the federation, the women's administrators and technical staff,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “The team itself was well-organized and played technically. They were strong on the ball and imaginative up top. They took half chances and turned them into goals. We were good defensively and decently organized. We are solving more and more in our movement patterns, and I’m finding that encouraging. I'm thankful the Lord opened the door to play this game, using the friendships we have built over the last two trips down here. Praise the Lord!”
Grace goalkeeper Abby Schue added: “This game was a lot of fun. We played well defensively, and it's encouraging to see how our team is playing together this early in the spring.”
