Members of Altrusa International of Warsaw learned about the Kosciusko County Riley Kids Fund from Alan Alderfer at their March 2 meeting.
Alderfer and Mike Bergen established the fund to help defray travel and food expenses for Kosciusko County families making trips to and from Riley Hospital for Children. The Bergen and Alderfer families have been greatly impacted by the medical treatment received at Riley for their own children.
The fund provides direct support to the work of the nonprofit hospital, and provides financial assistance to Kosciusko County families who have a child being treated there. Generally, assistance to the families is in the form of gasoline and food gift cards. Alderfer indicated that 50 cents of each $1 goes to Riley and the other 50 cents goes to Kosciusko County families in need.
The goal for the first year of the fund was $100,000, but over $212,000 was raised. Since then an annual radiothon provides additional money to the fund, which provided assistance to over 100 families last year.
Families seeking assistance from the KC Riley Kids Fund may contact the Help Center at K21 Health Services Pavilion, 1515 Provident Drive, Warsaw, or phone 574-372-3500.
To support the fund, contact Kosciusko County Community Foundation, 102 E. Market St., Warsaw, or phone 574-267-1901.
