Warsaw Girls Hoops Coach Resigns

Already facing the task of replacing a superb senior class of players, the Warsaw Lady Tigers are now in need of a head coach.
Michelle Harter, who was part of Warsaw’s girls basketball program for 26  years – 17 as the JV coach and the last nine as the varsity coach – told her players Wednesday afternoon that she is stepping down.
Harter said she wants to pursue coaching at the college level.
“It’s a good time for me, a good time for a change,” said Harter. “I’m at a time in my life where I’m looking for a change. I’ve always wanted to pursue something at the college level.”
Harter was a standout player at Wawasee High School, helping the Lady Warriors advance to the state finals in 1985.
Harter played collegiately at Huntington University, where she scored nearly 1,700 points and grabbed nearly 950 rebounds for the Foresters.
After a highly-successful stint as the Lady Tigers’ JV coach – 13 seasons under Will Wienhorst and four under John Snyder – Harter led Warsaw to a 136-70 record over nine varsity seasons.
Harter led the Lady Tigers to Northern?Lakes Conference championships in 2010 and 2013, and to sectional titles in 2013 and 2015.
In 2013, Warsaw was 24-2 and lost 47-44 to Fort Wayne South in the semistate.
The Lady Tigers were 20-4 this season, including a 5-2 mark in the NLC.
“This has been a great experience for me,” Harter said of her quarter-century with the Lady Tigers. “Warsaw is a tremendous program. I worked with some great coaches, and I learned a lot working under Will Wienhorst.
“It’s been a tremendous blessing to work with the young ladies over the years and watch them grow as players and as people.”
Harter said the players didn’t expect Wednesday’s announcement.
“They were surprised, and quiet,” said Harter. “I got a lot of text messages later from the senior girls thanking me. It was a surprise for them, but I wanted them to hear it from me.”
This season’s team featured seniors Dayton Groninger, Madi Graham, Page Desenberg, Maria Rivera,?Kenzie Welk and Abby Glass.
The Lady Tigers also got valuable minutes from juniors Kennedy Patton and Emma Bohnenkamper, sophomore Kacy Bragg and freshman Kaylee Patton.
“Warsaw is a tremendous program,” said Harter. “I think the program is in good shape. There’s some really talented young players in the system. Whoever takes over is going to have plenty to work with.”
