Mangas' Trey Beats Buzzer, Northridge

ELKHART – In a 19-point performance Wednesday night, Warsaw senior Kyle Mangas made just one shot in the fourth quarter.
Boy was it big one!
In the opening round of Class 4A Sectional 4 at historic North Side Gym in Elkhart, the Indiana Wesleyan University recruit and Indiana All-star hopeful swished a stepback three-pointer at the buzzer as the Tigers beat the Northridge Raiders 36-33.
Mangas’ heroics, which advanced the Tigers to Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal against Elkhart Central, came on the four-year anniversary of Jordan Stookey’s buzzer-beating trey that lifted Warsaw over Concord in three overtimes.
“You just have to stay confident throughout the whole game because there’s going to be a lot of ups and downs, and that happened tonight,” said Mangas, who hit a last-second shot to push Warsaw past Central in last year’s sectional final.
“I had some defensive mishaps on my part, so I wanted to take that last shot to kind of change that.”
The Tigers (15-9) beat Northridge (13-10) by a 68-46 score in Warsaw on Jan. 6, but Wednesday’s game was far different from that.
The Raiders led 6-2 after one quarter of play before Warsaw led 15-11 at halftime and 29-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Northridge won nine of its last 11 games before the sectional, and Warsaw coach Doug Ogle said the Raiders were a very different team than they were in the first meeting.
“Northridge played well, really well,” said Ogle. “Their defense was so much better. I thought they improved vastly defensively, and then (Nick) Yoder did nothing in our first game. He was very good tonight.”
Yoder made 5 of 7 shots for the Raiders Wednesday, leading them with 13 points and five rebounds, while Conner Utley and Luke Morrison chipped in with 10 and seven points, respectively.
Morrison scored 25 points against Warsaw in January and entered the tournament averaging 19 points per game.
“We had him circled because he got 25 on us back in January,” Ogle said of Morrison. “We spent a lot of time talking about how we wanted to guard him, and that was the key, our defense on him.”
In a game that was close throughout, with Warsaw holding the game’s largest advantage at 26-19, the Tigers scored three points just before the buzzer in each of the final three quarters.
Sophomore Nolan Groninger was fouled shooting a trey just before halftime and converted all three free throws with 0.2 seconds on the clock, pushing Warsaw’s halftime advantage from one to four points.
Mangas hit a three-pointer with three seconds left in the third quarter, giving the Tigers a six-point lead.
Mangas only added to his legacy with the game-winning shot, and he now needs just one point to tie 1952 grad Whitey Bell for fourth place on Warsaw’s all-time scoring list at 1,331.
“If you can score on the last possession of a half or a quarter, the points have more value,” said Ogle. “We felt good to be up four at halftime after shooting 5 of 20.”
The Tigers finished the game 14 of 40 from the field overall, 5 of 13 from the arc, and 3 of 5 at the free throw line.
Northridge was 13 of 26, overall, 3 of 5 from three-point range, and 4 of 7 at the charity stripe.
To go with Mangas’ 19 points and six rebounds, the Tigers got six points and six boards from junior Asher Blum, while seniors Jeremy David and Jaceb Burish scored four points each and Groninger the three free throws to end the first half.
Central advanced to Friday’s semifinal against Warsaw by rallying from a 20-point deficit to beat Penn 75-73 in three overtimes in Wednesday’s first game.
Central (20-2) beat Warsaw 50-45 at North Side Gym on Jan. 28. Mangas scored 30 points in that game.
“We’re looking forward to playing them on Friday night,” Ogle said of the Blue Blazers. “Obviously they had a heck of a win tonight, an exciting come-from-behind win. I didn’t know who was gonna win that game, they both played well enough to win at times. We’re looking forward to Friday.”
Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal game pits Elkhart Memorial, who drew a bye, against Goshen, a 40-38 winner over Concord in Tuesday’s sectional opener.
Three sectional games at North Side Gym so far this week – all three won with last-second shots.
