LEESBURG – A weekend of rain couldn’t dampen the success of the first annual Motorboats & Merlot 5K and Boat Show benefiting The Watershed Foundation.

The event, hosted at Tippy Creek Winery, was a fundraiser set up by the winery and Prowake Watersports to benefit local lakes and streams.

The Friday before the boat show there was a 5K run that attracted over 120 participants who braved the wind and rain. Runners received a glass of wine, a souvenir wine glass and awards, and enjoyed live entertainment.

On Saturday, storms loomed over the event in the morning, but a glimmer of pleasant weather attracted about 500 people who enjoyed live music, local wine, boats and food from the Big Apple Pizza food truck.

“Our community and local businesses depend on the health of our lakes. These two businesses took action with us to help ensure that they are supported and protected,” said Eileen Oaks, marketing specialist for TWF.

This is the third event this year that Tippy Creek Winery has hosted for local nonprofit groups. “We are part of this amazing community, so we want to give back as much as possible,” said Lori Richcreek, owner of the winery.

The Winery has hosted events for LAAN – Lake Area Autism Network (Art Show), Magical Meadows – (Derby Party) and The Watershed Foundation – (Boat Show/5 K). They are planning events with Humanity and Hope and Lakeland Youth Center later this summer.

Proceeds from the $1 entry fee, 5k race and a donation from the winery went toward a $1,000 check presented by Tippy Creek Winery to TWF.

TWF was founded in 1997 to protect and improve water quality in the upper Tippecanoe River watershed. The area stretches from Crooked Lake in Whitley County to the Warsaw-Winona area.

Over the past 20 years, TWF has worked with farmers and lake residents to implement over 300 water quality improvement projects. In the last four years alone, these efforts have prevented over 814 million pounds of weeds and algae from growing in area lakes and streams.
