Weather Delays Slow First Day At Golf State Finals
By Staff Report-
On a day that featured two lengthy weather delays, Manchester’s Harley Kruschwitz carded an 8-over 80 and was tied for 58th in the 100-player field, while Warsaw’s Sam Yeager shot an 83 and was tied for 79th.
Kruschwitz, who just completed his freshman year at Manchester High School, started his round on the back side with pars on the first two holes but bogeyed four of the next six and had a double bogey on another.
On the front side, Kruschwitz birdied holes 1 and 2, bogeyed 3 and 5, and double bogeyed No. 8.
Yeager, fresh off a solid junior season for the Tigers, also started his round on No. 10.
Yeager parred his first four holes, but bogeyed the next five.
On the front side, Yeager parred holes 1, 2, 4 and 7, bogeyed 5, 6, 8 and 9, and double bogeyed No. 3.
“There were two major weather delays, which made for a long day,” said Warsaw coach Rich Haddad. “Sam teed off at 8 a.m. and didn’t get done until 4:40.
“It was a very difficult course from tee to green, with a lot of trouble out there. Often, a shot a little off gets penalized. Sam had a few of those shots that were a little off, but cost him.
“He got off to a solid start with four straight pars, but then fought hard to hold it together with five straight bogeys, which was during the first weather delay. Overall, his irons weren’t as sharp today, but his short game rally saved a lot of holes for him. Good chipping and putting kept his round going.”
Westfield’s Noah Shanteau shot 3-under Tuesday and took a 1-stroke lead over Perry Meridian’s Nick Osterburg into today’s final round.
Four players shot 1-under Tuesday, while seven others were even heading into today’s round.
Carmel shot 2-under as a team and finished the round with a 6-stroke lead over Center Grove.
Westfield was third out of 15 teams after the first round, seven strokes out of the lead.
