Spell Check Letter Bombs Thursday Edition
June 9, 2017 at 6:24 p.m.
Careful readers of the Thursday edition of the Times-Union may have noticed a large number of bizarre typographical errors on pages 1A and 2A.
The final step in the process of preparing pages for our plateroom is to run spell check.
The spell check function in our pagination program, QuarkXpress, apparently lost it’s mind Thursday.
Each time the operator clicked “skip,” the software saw “replace.” Unless you actually want to replace something, there’s generally no need to avert your glance from the spell check window to the page.
That’s why the names “Shuter” and “Wilhite” became “Shute’ and “Wilhide.’
And that’s why timesuniononline.com became Threskiornithinae.coma.
It would almost be comical if it wasn’t so maddening.
While everyone makes mistakes, we want to assure readers our reporters don’t make that many.
As always, the Times-Union regrets any inconvenience the plethora of Thursday errors may have caused.
