An Indiana state trooper has thrown his hat into the ring for Kosciusko County sheriff.

Kyle Patrick Dukes, 40, Milford, announced today that he is filing to run for the position in the Republican caucus.

“I believe that the next sheriff must be a leader who will work with all police departments in Kosciusko County and be electable in 2018. My top priorities are encouraging teamwork and information sharing between our area law enforcement agencies, community policing to reduce property crime, and educating our youth of the illegal drug epidemic,” Dukes stated.

He is the third man to announce his candidacy, following former Warsaw Police Department detective Jordan Foreman and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputy sheriff Sgt. Det. Joshua Spangle.

The Kosciusko County Republican Party will hold a caucus to replace Aaron Rovenstine at 7 p.m. June 21 in the old county courthouse, 100 W. Center St., Warsaw.

Rovenstine was sentenced May 23 to one year of probation and 250 hours of community service on a single count of intimidation. As a result, he was legally removed from office.

Dukes has lived and worked in Kosciusko County since becoming an Indiana state trooper almost 17 years ago, according to a news release he provided.

He began his law enforcement career as a reserve deputy under the direction of his father, who was a two-term Republican sheriff for Noble County.

In addition to his law enforcement training, Dukes earned an associate degree in business supervision from Ivy Tech State College and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Tri-State University, now Trine University.

Throughout his career with the Indiana State Police, Dukes said he has benefited from extensive training in a wide array of law enforcement topics. He said he has gained experience as a member of the ISP Riot Team, being assigned to presidential and governor security details, and handling crowd and traffic control at major sporting events in Indiana.

Dukes received the Trooper of the Year Award for the Bremen Post in 2009.

Dukes believes he is the candidate who can bring a new level of professionalism to KCSD. He said he will promote a working relationship between all police agencies in Kosciusko County.

Dukes has been married to his wife, Mindy, for over 16 years and is the father of two sons.

While dedicating himself to his family and his career, he said he also strives to embrace community responsibility. He and his family are members of Wawasee Community Bible Church, where he oversees the security team. He is a member of the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Club and is involved with the Wawasee School Corp. He has been president of Lakeland Youth Center for seven years and also served on their board of directors.

Dukes is a past member of the Kosciusko Coalition on Drug Education and Kosciusko Community Cares.
