Justin Kalka, 34, of 715 W. Center St., Warsaw, is facing one charge of battery to a child under 14.
Police responded to a call at the store about 11:37 a.m. Sunday.
According to police, Kalka was shopping with his girlfriend and her 12- and 8-year-old daughters when the two girls got into an argument, said Warsaw Police Department Capt. Kip Shuter.
Kalka went to “discipline” the youngest girl and she was thrown to the ground.
One witness told police Kalka “body slammed” the girl and was out of control, Shuter said.
The witness said Kalka admitted he was out of control and stepped away from the girl.
Kalka told police he knelt down to spank the child but she slipped and fell on the floor, Shuter said.
The 12-year-old told police Kalka was going to spank her sister, and the girl fell and Kalka pinned the child to the ground, spanked her and scooped her up.
Officers saw new bruising on the girl’s buttocks when they interviewed the family at the residence. The 8-year-old also was holding a pack of ice on her wrist, Shuter said.
Police contacted Child Protective Services to assist with the investigation.
Kalka was booked into the Kosciusko?County Jail at 4:26 p.m. Sunday. He is out on bond.
