Town Coordinator Craig?Allebach said the flooding is the second worst he’s seen in the 17 years he’s worked for the town.
During the brief thunderstorm on Friday, 12 roads were closed due to high water.
After an estimated 3 to 6 inches of rainfall countywide, Bruner Road near Palestine Lake was washed out.
Park Director Holly Hummitch agreed with Allebach that it was the second-worst flooding she’s seen.
The beach will remain closed until the water recedes back.
“I think it will be back to normal in about a week,” Allebach said.
The heavy rainfall on Friday and then again on Monday brought the lake up to the lifeguard station at Winona Lake Beach.
Hummitch said they’ve got most of the debris picked up, but for safety purposes the beach will remain closed indefinitely.
She said the weather has lowered attendance at the park so she hasn’t heard many complaints from residents.
As far as repairs, she said the town may have to put more sand on the beach and will have to shift the pier back into place.
Allebach said they have to wait until the water goes back down before they can decide that.
The park also has several puddles of water where there’s grass.
“The park has always been a sponge,” Hummitch said. She added the puddles will go away naturally.
Allebach said every time it rains, there’s puddles in the park. He said the town may look for more ways to drain water from the park in the future.
