30 Area Wrestlers Advance From Sectionals To Regional Action

A total of 30 high school wrestlers from the times-union coverage area advanced from Saturday’s sectional tournaments to regional competition.
Plymouth Sectional
Warsaw senior Kyle Hatch remains undefeated at 152 pounds and claimed the Plymouth Sectional title with two pins and a technical fall in the championship round over Culver Academies’ Jacob Trefren.
Jose Grimmett (132 pounds) and Christian Taylor (145) advanced to the Rochester Regional with fourth-place finishes.
Wawasee had 10 wrestlers advance from the Plymouth Sectional, the most among coverage-area teams. Ricardo Romo (106) and Braxton Alexander (120) claimed sectional titles, while Germia Brooks (126) and Jeremiah Dilley (220) finished second.
Garrett Stuckman (113), Ramon Torres (152), Alejandro Castro (182), Damien Rodriguez (195) and Elisha tipping (285) all claimed third-place finishes for Wawasee. Jeremiah Ponsler (160) advanced with a fourth-place finish. Wawasee was third in the team standings behind host Plymouth and Culver Academies.
Triton was fourth in the team standings and advanced seven wrestlers to the Rochester Regional. Connor Pitney (106), Nate Riggins (113) and James Snyder (170) finished second in their classes. Bryce Swihart (120), Malachi Greene (126) and Marcus Brown (132) had third-place finishes, and Cam Scarberry was fourth at 195 pounds.
Tippecanoe Valley advanced three to the regional. Haley Hoover (106), Jordan Owens (138) and Tyler Manuszak (182) all finished fourth in the sectional.
Peru Sectional
Manchester had four sectional champions, the most of any area team, and six wrestlers advance to the Peru Regional on Saturday.
Braxtin Wilson (120), Collin Meggison (145), Wade France (152) and Delton Moore (160) were sectional champions. Quentin Moore (170) was second, and Tyce Rooney (113) finished fourth.
Carroll Sectional
Whitko’s Isaac Walters was second at 182 pounds at the Carroll Sectional in Huntertown and will return to Carroll to represent the Wildcats in Saturday’s regional tournament.

Warsaw 3rd, Wawasee 4th In NLC Swim Meet
DUNLAP – Warsaw’s boys swimming team finished third in the Northern Lakes Conference Meet Saturday, behind Northridge and host Concord. Wawasee was fourth in the meet.
The Tiger 200 medley relay team of Nick Zogbi, Grant Knight, Evan Borchers and Alex Cook won in 1:38.84. Warsaw took second in the 200 freestyle relay and finished third in the 400 free relay. Zogbi was second in the 100 backstroke, and Knight was second in the 100 breaststroke.
Wawasee’s Brady Robinson was second in the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly, and Brady Classen was third in the diving competition for the Warriors.
Wawasee will travel to Kendallville to take on East Noble in a dual meet on Tuesday. Warsaw is off until it hosts the sectional meet Feb. 16 and 18.

Whitko Closes With Win
BUNKER HILL – Brianna Cumberland finished with 15 points, Aly Reiff 12, and Hanna Yohe added 11 to lead 2A No. 2 Whitko to a 61-21 girls basketball win at Maconaquah Saturday night.
The win wrapped up second place in the Three Rivers Conference for Whitko.
Whitko (19-4) opens postseason play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Fremont (8-14) in the first round of the Central Noble Sectional in Albion.

Whitko Falls In See-Saw TRC Game
BUNKER HILL – River West had 19 points, with Nate Walpole and Alex Robbins adding 17 points each in Whitko’s 61-57 loss at Maconaquah in a Three Rivers Conference boys basketball game Saturday night.
Whitko trailed by six at the end of the first quarter, and trimmed the deficit to one by halftime. The Wildcats led 46-42 at the end of three quarters before being outscored 19-11 in the decisive fourth period.
The Wildcats (8-7, 3-3 TRC) play a conference game at North Miami on Thursday.

Lady Cougars Clinch Winning Season
GOSHEN – Hope Fancil had 22 points, and Melissa Goss added nine in Lakeland Christian’s 43-20 win at Clinton Christian Saturday afternoon.
Goss added 10 rebounds, and Jess Slone pulled down nine boards for LCA,
The victory assures the Lady Cougars will finish the 2016-17 season with a winning record. They stand at 12-10 entering Tuesday’s game against Bethany Christian at the 1A Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional.

Whitko Closes With Win
BUNKER HILL – Brianna Cumberland finished with 15 points, Aly Reiff 12, and Hanna Yohe added 11 to lead 2A No. 2 Whitko to a 61-21 girls basketball win at Maconaquah Saturday night.
The win wrapped up second place in the Three Rivers Conference for Whitko.
Whitko (19-4) opens postseason play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Fremont (8-14) in the first round of the Central Noble Sectional in Albion.

Whitko Falls In See-Saw TRC Game
BUNKER HILL – River West had 19 points, with Nate Walpole and Alex Robbins adding 17 points each in Whitko’s 61-57 loss at Maconaquah in a Three Rivers Conference boys basketball game Saturday night.
Whitko trailed by six at the end of the first quarter, and trimmed the deficit to one by halftime. The Wildcats led 46-42 at the end of three quarters before being outscored 19-11 in the decisive fourth period.
The Wildcats (8-7, 3-3 TRC) play a conference game at North Miami on Thursday.

Lady Cougars Clinch Winning Season
GOSHEN – Hope Fancil had 22 points, and Melissa Goss added nine in Lakeland Christian’s 43-20 win at Clinton Christian Saturday afternoon.
Goss added 10 rebounds, and Jess Slone pulled down nine boards for LCA,
The victory assures the Lady Cougars will finish the 2016-17 season with a winning record. They stand at 12-10 entering Tuesday’s game against Bethany Christian at the 1A Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional.

Triton Rolls Bluejays
NORTH JUDSON – Zac Pitney scored a game-high 29 points, and Nate Flenar added 12 in Triton’s 67-48 Hoosier North Athletic Conference boys basketball win at North Judson Saturday night.
The Trojans jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first quarter, led 31-14 at halftime and cruised from there.
Now 9-5 overall and 5-0 in the HNAC, Triton plays a non-conference game at Argos Thursday night.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves.
