COLUMBIA CITY — James J. Cook, 79, rural Larwill, died Jan. 24, 2017, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born Jan. 10, 1938, in South Whitley, a son of Joseph Ambrose and Mary Louise Myers Cook. He graduated from Larwill High School.
He enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged June 9, 1963.
On May 7, 1971, he was united in marriage to Beverly A. Scherer. They made their home in Fort Wayne for a couple of years before moving to their home south of Larwill. Mrs. Cook died Aug. 12, 2013.
In addition to farming, he worked for International Harvester until 1985. He then began working for Reiff Construction and retired from Whitley Mobile Homes in the mid-2000s.
Surviving relatives include two children, Craig (spouse Heather) Cook, Columbia City, and Cathy (spouse Todd) Boersma, Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; four sisters: Donna Miller, Phoenix, Ariz.; Kate Phillips, Pierceton; Linda Collier, Pierceton; and Laura “Sis” Minnick, Coesse; and two brothers, Dennis Mulligan, Fort Wayne, and Tom Mulligan, Florida.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded by a sister and two brothers: Pat Stewart, Nick Cook and Mike Mulligan.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. 
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
