The Tigers weren’t at their best offensively or defensively in Tuesday night’s game at Mishawaka Marian, but their effort on the boards led them to a 47-45 victory over the Knights (6-7).
Improving to 10-4 on the season with their fourth straight win, the Tigers outrebounded Marian 35-18, including a 15-5 edge on the offensive glass.
Warsaw’s work on the offensive boards led to 12 second-chance points, while Marian had none – an extremely key stat in the two-point victory.
“Our guys were determined,” said Ogle. “I told them I was disappointed in our defense on Zach Lattimer. I was disappointed in how many bad possessions we had offensively. But, I also said ‘hey, we did rebound big-time.’ That is a testament to their competitive spirit.
“Rebounding is nothing more than effort and focus, and going after it. That part we did do, and that’s why we won.”
To go with his 23 points, Indiana All-Star hopeful Kyle Mangas pulled down eight rebounds for the Tigers, while fellow senior Jeremy David grabbed 10 boards to go with six points.
The Tigers, who were 19 of 44 from the field overall, 6 of 10 from the arc and 3 of 8 at the free throw line, led 13-9 after one quarter of play, 24-21 at halftime and 39-30 heading into the final frame.
The nine-point advantage with eight minutes to play was Warsaw’s largest lead of the game.
Marian cut the deficit to three, 45-42, with a pair of free throws.
The Knights later had a chance to tie it, but Lattimer’s three-point attempt with eight seconds to play was off the mark.
Mangas rebounded the miss, was fouled, and made two charity tosses with 4.6 seconds left to give his team a 47-42 advantage.
Marian made a trey as time expired to account for the final score.
Mangas’ clutch free throws came after he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 30 seconds remaining and the Tigers leading 45-40.
Mangas scored his 23 points by making 8 of 14 attempts from the field overall, 5 of 7 from the arc, and 2 of 3 at the charity stripe.
“Kyle Mangas kind of bailed us out tonight in a lot of ways,” said Ogle. “We just weren’t sharp, offensively or defensively, but rebounding and Kyle Mangas kind of carried the day.”
The 6-foot-3 standout upped his career scoring total to 1,115 points. He needs 32 points to tie 1981 Indiana All-Star Ron Brandenburg for eighth on Warsaw’s all-time scoring list, and then 34 after that to tie 1978 grad Kim Essenburg for seventh.
Braxton Minix and Nolan Groninger scored seven and five points, respectively for the Tigers, while Jaceb Burish chipped in with four.
Asher Blum rounded out Warsaw’s offensive output with two points.
Lattimer led the Knights with 23 points, nine in the fourth quarter, while Coley Quinn and Michael Hemingway scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Tigers have won three road games in five days, and are still in a stretch where they are slated for five games in nine days.
Warsaw puts its 17-game Northern Lakes Conference win streak on the line Friday when it hosts Concord, followed by a trip to Crown Point Saturday.
“Coming into tonight, Concord had won three of their last four games, so they’re playing much better,” said Ogle. “They’re going to play a zone against us. I don’t know if it’ll be exactly like Mishawaka Marian’s zone, but it’ll be nice to be back in the Tiger Den after this three-game road swing.
“Three road games in five days is asking a lot, and our guys came up here and won the game. I told the guys, ‘if we can get through these five games in nine days, that says something about us.’”
