LCA Boys, Girls Sweep Granger Christian

The Cougars, however, righted themselves in time to preserve a 48-45 win over the Knights.
Sophomore Landon Twombly’s jumper with 3:35 left gave LCA a 47-37 lead. The Knights turned up the defensive pressure, and hurried up the Cougar offense, forcing four turnovers in final 2-1/2 minutes.
“With 1:47 left we were up eight, and we talked about making sure we didn’t shoot ourselves out of the game by taking a bunch of wild shots” Cougar head coach Chris Hohm said. “So then it comes down to making free throws, and it wasn’t our best performance, but we made enough to win.”
Granger had to work its way into a position for the Cougars to shoot free throws, and that burned off some of the clock. But the task became more daunting with 1:18 left, when Lakeland’s Josh McDaniel fouled out.
“He’s our leading scorer, so when Josh went out of the game, it was a test to see how we’d respond,” Hohm said. “There was some panic, but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. I was pleased it was momentary; it didn’t carry over for the rest of the game.”
Granger’s Donney Dunbar hit a three from the right side to cut the LCA lead to 47-44 with 45 seconds to go. Twombly was fouled and hit 1 of 2 free throws with 40 seconds left.
The Knights couldn’t find a quick shot, and an interior pass was tipped away, with a scrum to recover the ball going all the way to the opposite baseline before Granger was awarded the ball out of bounds.
The Knights hurried the ball back down the floor, and David Counsellor’s jumper rimmed out, but he was fouled in the act. He hit one of two free throws, with LCA’s Jeremy Gross gathering the rebound and getting fouled with 11.8 seconds to go.
Gross missed the front end of his one-and-one, and the Knight’s Mike Mudd hustled up the floor and put up a three. The rebound was tipped out to Nathan Emswiler, who missed a three from the right side, with Eli Raymond getting the rebound for LCA as time expired.
Twombly helped the Cougars build their lead with three steals and layup, including on consecutive possessions in the third quarter.
“(Twombly) was out of control the first eight to 10 games, just flailing shots in there and hoping for calls he’d get at the junior high or JV level,”?Hohm said. “But at the varsity level he doesn’t get those calls, so he’s learned to control himself more, and tonight he stepped up especially in the second half. Instead of being a jump shooter, he was aggressive and got to the basket effectively.
“He’s one of our best at reading the passing lanes, and he’s quick enough to turn those steals into points.”
Twombly and McDaniel finished with 14 points each, and Jake Harmon had 11 for the Cougars. Emswiler and Mudd had 14 points each for Granger.
Now 6-8 on the season, Lakeland Christian will host Cornerstone Christian of Fort Wayne on Tuesday.
Lady Cougars 45
Granger Christian 36
The Lakeland Christian girls game with Granger Christian had a similar pattern to the boys game, with the Lady Knights cutting a deficit to a one-possession game before the Lady Cougars took a 45-36 win.
“It was a battle for sure. In the first quarter we fell behind when we missed some easy shots right off the bat. We were flat coming out,” LCA head coach Allison Kauffman said.
Lakeland Christian held Granger to one point in the third quarter and led 27-16 going in to the final period.
The Lady Knights cut the lead to three points before Lakeland Christian pulled away late. Melissa Goss hit all six of her free throws in the fourth quarter, and Hope Fancil had 12 of her game-high 23 points in the final eight minutes to help seal the win. Goss finished with 13 points in the game.
“We got really rushed, especially on the offensive end,” Kauffman said of the fourth quarter. “We rushed our passes, we rushed our shots, and we had quite a few turnovers just because we got sped up and got concerned with going really fast.
“I think we just didn’t have a lot of confidence, and we wanted to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible, or so it seemed at times. So the momentum went back and forth a little bit.”
Now 10-9 on the season, the Lady Cougars host Traders Point Christian in a Saturday matinee, with a 2 p.m. tipoff.
