Lady Warriors Upset No. 1 Whitko

SYRACUSE – Wawasee’s Aubrey Kuhn hit a pair free throws with about 20 second left, and Casey Schroeder hit one of two charity tosses in the waning seconds to give the Lady Warriors a 48-46 win over 2A No. 1 Whitko in a non-conference basketball game at the Hardwood Tepee Tuesday night.
Whitko’s Aly Reiff drained a three-pointer with around 30 seconds left to give the Lady Wildcats a 46-45 lead, setting up Kuhn for her heroics.
The Lady Warriors led 15-10 after the first quarter, and held a 22-17 advantage at halftime. Aubrey Schmeltz had 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first two quarters, including nine in the first period.
The visitors from South Whitley came back in the third quarter, outscoring Wawasee 15-9 to take a 32-31 lead into the dramatic final period. Seniors Hanna Yohe and Brianna Cumberland had five points each in the third-quarter rally.
Reiff had 10 of her team-high 15 points in the final period, including a 5-of-6 effort from the line in the last eight minutes. She hit 6 of 8 free throws in the game.
Yohe finished with 13 points and Cumberland tallied 10 for Whitko.
Schroeder scored seven of her 15 points in the third quarter to keep Wawasee in the contest. Hannah-Marie Lamle had six points, with Hannah Haines and Kuhn adding five points each in the winning effort.
Wawasee won the junior varsity game 41-26 over Whitko. Sara Pritchard had 10 points for the Lady Warriors, with Hannah Lancaster adding nine and  McKenzie Smith eight points. Whitko was paced by Anna Ousley’s nine points and Cassidy Stout’s five.
Both teams play conference rivalry games Thursday night. Wawasee (8-10) travels to Warsaw to take on the 16-3 Lady Tigers in Northern Lakes Conference play. Whitko (16-3) hosts Tippecanoe Valley (16-4) in a game likely to decide the Three Rivers Conference title.
