Mangas Leads Tigers Past Panthers

January 16, 2017 at 5:45 p.m.

FORT WAYNE – Malik Williams, Fort Wayne Snider’s 7-foot standout and University of Louisville recruit, was the featured attraction in Saturday’s high school basketball game against Warsaw.
That’s hard to argue.
Kyle Mangas, Warsaw’s 6-foot-3 go-to player and Indiana Wesleyan recruit, stole the show, however.
That is also hard to argue.
In a 46-39 win at Snider, Mangas scored 25 points, 14 in the fourth quarter, and pulled down nine rebounds as he helped the Tigers rally from a nine-point deficit.
Warsaw, now 9-4 on the season after its third-straight win since losing two games at the Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle, outscored Snider 16-4 in the fourth quarter.
Williams, who finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five blocks, was 3 of 12 from the field, 1 of 5 from three-point range, and was held to four points in the second half.
The Panthers fell to 6-5 on the season, though they are the only undefeated in the Summit Conference.
“I thought we played with a pretty good amount of toughness,” said Ogle. “We had to battle when things weren’t going very well. I think Nolan Groninger came in and gave us a big lift, and he played a heck of a second half.
“We called timeout, and we were down by nine, and I said ‘lets see if we can get it down to four or five going into the fourth quarter.’ And we got it there. Our defense in the second half was really good, and we just made enough plays.”
Snider led 14-8 after one quarter of play, 21-17 at halftime and 35-30 going into the final frame.
With just under two minutes to play, Groninger, a sophomore seeing more varsity playing time since Ross Johnson left the team after the holidays, stole the ball from Williams and turned it into an assist to Mangas.
Mangas’ basket with 1:58 remaining gave the Tigers a 39-37 lead.
Snider tied the score at 39-39, but Warsaw scored the final seven points of the game.
“For a lot of the game, we were just rushing,” said Ogle. “We took too many bad shots and had too many turnovers in the first half.
“Malik Williams is one heck of a defensive player in the basket area. How many shots did he block where you just said to yourself ‘that was a heck of a block, what can I do differently?’ He is so quick to the ball, and so long. We’re just so happy with this win tonight. This is an important win for our confidence.”
Mangas, who upped his career scoring total to 1,092 points, agreed with his coach, saying Saturday’s win was a big confidence boost for the team.
“We were having a rough time a couple weeks ago, but we’ve had some good practices and things are definitely coming together,” said Mangas. “This win is big for us.”
Junior Asher Blum, who had 10 points and seven rebounds Friday night against Goshen, tallied 10 points and five boards against Snider.
“Asher stepped up and made all six of his free throws and finished with 10 points and five rebounds,” said Ogle. “This was another step forward for Asher. I’m really happy with the way he played.”
Senior Braxton Minix finished with six points and four rebounds, while Groninger had five points and five assists.
To go with Williams’ 15 points, Snider got 11 points from Keondre Brown, while Jordan Gorman and Michael Barnfield scored five and four points, respectively.
The Tigers, in a stretch where they will play five games in nine days, play at Mishawaka Marian Tuesday, followed by a home game Friday against Concord and a rescheduled contest at Crown Point Saturday.
