INDIANAPOLIS – Pairings for the 42nd annual IHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament were announced Sunday night.
In Class 4A’s Sectional 4 at Goshen, the host Lady RedHawks open the tournament against No. 10 Penn on Jan. 31. The winner of that game takes on Elkhart Central in the first semifinal Feb. 3.
Concord and Northridge play the first game on Feb. 1, followed by Warsaw and Elkhart Memorial. The winners of those games play in the second semifinal on Feb. 3.
At West Noble’s Class 3A Sectional 21 in Ligonier, Wawasee will face Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood in the second game Jan. 31, following the host Lady Chargers’ game with Lakeland.
Fairfield will get the West Noble/Lakeland winner in the first semifinal Feb. 3, and No. 7 Tippecanoe Valley faces the NorthWood/Wawasee winner.
Whitko, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, opens the Central Noble Sectional in Albion against Fremont on Jan. 31. The winner gets LaVille in the first semifinal Feb. 3.
On Feb. 1, Prairie Heights and Central Noble square off in the first quarterfinal game, with the winners facing each other in the second semifinal Feb. 3.
Manchester opens play in the 2A Northfield Sectional against Three Rivers Conference foe Wabash in the first game Feb. 1. The winner of that game faces the winner of Northfield and Rochester in the semifinals. The other semifinal will have Southwood taking on the winner of the Cass/Oak Hill game from Jan. 31.
Triton will play in the second quarterfinal game Feb. 1 against top-ranked Argos in the 1A Culver Community Sectional. The winner will take on the winner of the North Miami/Culver Community game in the second semifinal on Feb. 3. In the first semifinal, LaCrosse will take on the winner of the South Central (Union Mills) vs. South Bend Career Academy game from Jan. 31.
Lakeland Christian will open the 1A Fort Wayne Blackhawk Sectional Jan. 31 against Bethany Christian. The victor will get Lakeland Christian. Host Blackhawk will play the winner of the Elkhart Christian/Hamilton game in the semifinals.
All sectional championship games are scheduled for Feb. 4.

Lady Vikings Roll Over Rochester

AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley used balanced scoring to roll 47-24 over rival Rochester in a Three Rivers Conference girls basketball game Saturday.
Emily Peterson led all scorers with 12 points for Valley, with Sophie Bussard, Hannah Dunn and Anne Secrest adding eight points each.
Class 3A No. 7 Valley remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0, and improved to 15-4 overall. They will host Peru (4-12, 1-5 TRC) on Tuesday, and play 2A No. 1 Whitko in South Whitley on Thursday.

Valley Comeback Falls Short
WINAMAC – Trailing by 11 after three quarters, Tippecanoe Valley outscored host Winamac 24-18 in the fourth quarter, but fell short to the Warriors 64-61 in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday.
Alec Craig led all scorers with 31 points for the Vikings. Jarod Duzenbery had eight points, and Wes Melanson added seven for Valley.
The Vikings were outrebounded 30-14 by Winamac.
Valley (6-8) hosts Southwood in Three Rivers Conference play Friday.

Cougars Secure Fifth Victory
WINONA LAKE – Lakeland Christian’s Jake Harmon and Landon Twombly had 17 points each, and Josh McDaniel added 16 in the Cougars’ 67-40 win over visiting South Bend Trinity in a boys basketball game Saturday.
The win is the fifth of the season for LCA, one more than last season and matching the total over the last two years.
Lakeland Christian hit 14 three-point shots in the game, led by Harmon’s five and McDaniel with four. Landon Twombly hit three triples, and Braxton Keller hit a pair for the Cougars.
LCA will host Granger Christian Tuesday.

Hatch Wins At Garrett Tourney
GARRETT – Warsaw senior Kyle Hatch won the 152-pound class at the Garrett Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. Christian Taylor (138) and Dillon Estep (285) made it to the championship round before falling.
Grayson Drudge (182) went 2-2. Jose Grimmett (132), Riley Hogenson (126), and Isaiah Owens (106) each went 1-2 in the tourney.
The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Concord for a Northern Lakes Conference dual match.

Valley Fourth In Tourney
ROCHESTER – Tippecanoe Valley wrestlers Devin Bandow (120 pounds) and Tyler Manuszak (195) went undefeated at the Rochester Super 8 Tournament Saturday.
The Vikings went 2-3 on the day as a team, falling 47-30 to Rochester, 60-21 to Peru and 33-27 to West Central. Valley claimed a 42-36 win over Northfield and a 60-0 win over Pioneer.
Chevy Teeter had four wins for Valley, with Haley Hoover, Jon Humes, Isaac Randall and Joseph Irons winning three matches each.
Valley begins its postseason Saturday with the Three Rivers Conference Tournament at North Miami.

Wawasee Has Four Champs
MONROE – Wawasee’s Braxton Alexander (120 pounds), Germia Brooks (126), Jeremiah Dilley (220) and Elisha Tipping (285) won their weight classes at the Adams Central Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.
Garrett Stuckman (113) Raymon Torres (152) Xavier Ortiz (170) and Alex Castro (195) were runners-up. Jeremiah Ponsler (160) and Damien Rodriguez finished third in their classes.
Wawasee enters the postseason at the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament Saturday at Northridge.

Morgan, Miller Double Winners At Girls NLC Meet

MIDDLEBURY – Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan and Wawasee’s Paige Miller were double winners in the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Swimming Championships Saturday at Northridge High School.
Morgan, a senior, won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and became a four-time NLC champion in both events. Miller won the 200 and 500 freestyle events for the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Tigers’ Delaney Wihebrink was third in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 IM. Laurel Miller was seventh in the 100 breaststroke and won the consolation race in the 200 freestyle. Lauren Kuhl was sixth in the 500 free. Taylor Gunter was seventh in the 100 butterly, and Olivia herman was eighth in the 50 free.
Wawasee’s Ella Park was fourth in the 500 freestyle, Shelby Adams was fifth in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 IM, and Ebba Bjurman was seventh in the 100 backstroke.
Warsaw was third in the team standings with 289 points, and Wawasee was fourth with 254. Northridge was the champion with 510 points, and Concord was second at 444 points.
Wawasee is off until the sectional preliminaries at Northridge Feb. 2. Warsaw, along with the Tiger boys team, will host Culver Academies Tuesday.

Hatch Wins At Garrett Tourney
GARRETT – Warsaw senior Kyle Hatch won the 152-pound class at the Garrett Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday. Christian Taylor (138) and Dillon Estep (285) made it to the championship round before falling.
Grayson Drudge (182) went 2-2. Jose Grimmett (132), Riley Hogenson (126), and Isaiah Owens (106) each went 1-2 in the tourney.
The Tigers are back in action Wednesday, traveling to Concord for a Northern Lakes Conference dual match.

Valley Fourth In Tourney
ROCHESTER – Tippecanoe Valley wrestlers Devin Bandow (120 pounds) and Tyler Manuszak (195) went undefeated at the Rochester Super 8 Tournament Saturday.
The Vikings went 2-3 on the day as a team, falling 47-30 to Rochester, 60-21 to Peru and 33-27 to West Central. Valley claimed a 42-36 win over Northfield and a 60-0 win over Pioneer.
Chevy Teeter had four wins for Valley, with Haley Hoover, Jon Humes, Isaac Randall and Joseph Irons winning three matches each.
Valley begins its postseason Saturday with the Three Rivers Conference Tournament at North Miami.

Wawasee Has Four Champs
MONROE – Wawasee’s Braxton Alexander (120 pounds), Germia Brooks (126), Jeremiah Dilley (220) and Elisha Tipping (285) won their weight classes at the Adams Central Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.
Garrett Stuckman (113) Raymon Torres (152) Xavier Ortiz (170) and Alex Castro (195) were runners-up. Jeremiah Ponsler (160) and Damien Rodriguez finished third in their classes.
Wawasee enters the postseason at the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament Saturday at Northridge.

Morgan, Miller Double Winners At Girls NLC Meet

MIDDLEBURY – Warsaw’s Brenna Morgan and Wawasee’s Paige Miller were double winners in the Northern Lakes Conference Girls Swimming Championships Saturday at Northridge High School.
Morgan, a senior, won the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and became a four-time NLC champion in both events. Miller won the 200 and 500 freestyle events for the Lady Warriors.
The Lady Tigers’ Delaney Wihebrink was third in the 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 IM. Laurel Miller was seventh in the 100 breaststroke and won the consolation race in the 200 freestyle. Lauren Kuhl was sixth in the 500 free. Taylor Gunter was seventh in the 100 butterly, and Olivia herman was eighth in the 50 free.
Wawasee’s Ella Park was fourth in the 500 freestyle, Shelby Adams was fifth in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 200 IM, and Ebba Bjurman was seventh in the 100 backstroke.
Warsaw was third in the team standings with 289 points, and Wawasee was fourth with 254. Northridge was the champion with 510 points, and Concord was second at 444 points.
Wawasee is off until the sectional preliminaries at Northridge Feb. 2. Warsaw, along with the Tiger boys team, will host Culver Academies Tuesday.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves.
