The income-based program is part of Kosciusko Community Senior Services, Warsaw. It serves just under 100 people a day Monday through Friday, but KCSS Executive Director David Neff thinks that number could be higher.
“I know there’s a bunch of seniors that could use these meals that just don’t know about us,” he said.
Mobile Meals has six routes in Warsaw, as well as routes in North Webster, Milford and Syracuse. The program is open to anyone in Kosciusko County who is 60 or older and homebound.
A simple phone call or email can get seniors an application with a stamped envelope, says Jamie Krygowski, who leads the Mobile Meals service.
“Then all they need to do is fill it out and send it back,” she said.
The program’s pricing is based on a sliding scale, she said. Once the application is returned, the agency will work out the financial details with eligible seniors.
The amount seniors pay is based on what’s left each month after they pay all their bills. Meals typically cost $3 to $5, with the average being $4, Krygowski said.
The program is able to adapt to special diets — low cholesterol, diabetes, low sodium, fat free — with verification from a doctor.
Mobile Meals helps ensure that seniors get at least one nutritious dinner a day. But the benefits go beyond health.
The volunteers who bring the meals may be the only people some seniors have contact with, so the daily delivery also serves as a wellness check, Neff said.
He believes the service is also good for the community. “The whole goal of senior services is to sustain seniors in their home as long as possible,” he said.
It’s beneficial to the seniors themselves to remain in a familiar environment, and it’s also less costly than a care facility.
Seniors who want to apply for the Mobile Meals program may call Krygowski at 574-267-2012 or email [email protected]. A family member may also begin the process for a homebound relative.
