Lady Lancers No Match For No. 5 Marian

WINONA LAKE – Offense was hard to find for Grace College’s women’s basketball team on Wednesday against No. 5 Marian.
The Lady Lancers (9-10, 4-3 Crossroads League) were stifled on offense and fell 68-29 to the defending NAIA national champions.
Grace’s output was the program’s lowest since scoring 26 points in a game on Jan. 29, 2005.
For the game, Grace shot 23 percent. The Lady Lancers especially struggled from deep, missing 20 of their 21 three-pointers against the Knights (16-3, 6-1 CL).
Grace’s shooting woes began in the first half. The Lady Lancers struggled to find a rhythm and only mustered 14 points before halftime. Grace scored eight points in the first quarter and six in the second.
At the end of the first quarter, Grace trailed 15-8. The Lady Lancers scored six of their eight points off fastbreak opportunities.
It took Grace over five minutes to score in the second quarter. Marian eased out to a 20-8 lead before Vironnica Drake sparked Grace with an assist and a layup on back-to-back possessions.
Drake scored again with a minute left in the half, but Marian responded with a three-pointer to take a 29-14 lead into halftime.
For the half, Grace shot 25 percent from the floor including 0 of 12 from the arc.
Drake and Haley Richardson were Grace’s primary sources of scoring in the third quarter. Richardson hit two free throws and muscled to a tough basket in the paint, and Drake converted an and-1.
But Marian enjoyed its best offensive quarter in the third, outscoring Grace 21-8 to go ahead by 28 entering the final stanza.
Grace hit another scoring drought to start the fourth quarter, going nearly six minutes before Chloe Pridgen made a shot in the paint.
The Lady Lancers missed their first 19 triples of the contest before Lauren Godfrey hit a three-pointer with 1:45 left in the contest.
Marian, thanks to 20 assists on 25 made field goals, eased away to a comfortable win. The Knights shot 46 percent from the floor and outrebounded Grace by seven.
Grace had 24 turnovers and just four assists as a team.
Drake led Grace with nine points, four rebounds and two steals, and Richardson added eight points and four boards. No other player for Grace scored more than four. Pridgen produced four points and five boards in 12 minutes.
The Lady Lancers will head to Spring Arbor on Saturday for a doubleheader. The women’s game will tip off at 1 p.m. with the men to follow at 3 p.m.
