Vikings Beat TRC Foe Northfield
By Mark [email protected]
He said his team beat visiting Northfield 59-55 Friday despite lacking energy and enthusiasm, especially in the first half of the Three Rivers Conference boys basketball game.
The Norsemen used a 2-3 zone defense to help preserve their energy. Four starters played all 32 minutes, and the fifth, Ryan Driscoll, probably would have played more than 27 minutes except for his well-bandaged right thumb.
Valley struggled to get a good shot early on. Senior guard Alec Craig had all eight Viking points in the first quarter, when Valley trailed by six.
The Vikings didn’t take a lead until there was about 45 seconds before halftime, and kept a two-point lead into the intermission.
“I thought we were flat in the first half; we didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm,”?Patrick said. “The kids still aren’t back in school, but I don’t think (Northfield) is either. I didn’t think we played well, but we played well enough to win.
“In the locker room at half, I told the guys ‘hey, we’re in the lead. We’re not down by 30.’ It’s like we don’t have that fire, that enthusiasm that we should right now. We need more leadership from our four seniors, and obviously we don’t have that right now.”
Northfield junior Joe Halderman, an 18 percent shooter from beyond the arc coming in to Friday night, made a trio of threes in the second half to keep his team in the game. He wound up hitting 5 of 6 three-point attempts for his 15 points. Senior Austin Trump hit all three of his shots from beyond the arc in the second half on his way to 15 points.
“We did a poor job of getting out on (Halderman), and (Trump) hit a couple of threes. We gave up some threes in the 1-3-1 zone, but we didn’t let their big kids score.”
Indeed, center Cody Holmes had 12 points, but six of those came on stick-backs in the fourth quarter. Kyle Reed added 11.
The biggest difference in the game came at the free throw line. Keith Wright and Craig had all the free throws for Valley, and were 9 of 10 from the chairity stripe, including a perfect 8-of-8 effort in the fourth quarter when the Norsemen were trying to come back. Meanwhile, the Norsemen were a chilly 3 of 9 at the free-throw line.
Wright finished with 19 points and Craig 18 to lead all scorers.
Tanner Trippiedi came off the bench to hit three shots from beyond the arc, including two in the early part of the fourth quarter when Valley took the lead for good. He finished with 11 points.
With the win, Patrick moved into a tie for second place with Pat Rudy on the Indiana all-time wins list with 761. Jack Butcher holds the record with 806 wins, and Patrick is the winningest active coach in the state.
The Vikings have now won four of their last five games to improve to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the TRC. They travel to Plymouth for a non-conference game at 7:45 tonight.
