A Warsaw man is facing robbery charges after police say he flagged down a passerby and stole his Jeep.
Larry Duane Potts, 36, of 496 Clinic Court, Warsaw, was arrested Monday on one count of robbery, a level 5 felony; one count of auto theft, a level 4 felony; one count of resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor; and one count of driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor.
Police were alerted to  the scene when a resident called and asked officers to do a welfare check on Potts, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police were led to an area near the Warsaw Municipal Airport, where an officer was flagged down by a resident.
The resident told police that he noticed Potts lying in the ditch and waving his hand for help. The driver pulled over to assist Potts and opened the door. Potts jumped in the vehicle and forced the victim out of his Jeep, the affidavit states.
Potts didn’t get very far with the vehicle as the emergency brake engaged, causing the Jeep to leave skid marks as Potts tried to drive it away.
Police caught up with Potts, who admitted he stole the Jeep, the affidavit states.
Potts has a prior auto conviction from January 2016.
Potts is being held in the Kosciusko County Jail on a $20,250 bond.
