BOURBON – Triton answered Oregon-Davis’ 7-0 run to start the game with one of its own.
But the Lady Bobcats went on a 14-0 run to close the opening quarter, and the Lady Trojans weren’t heard from again in a 61-32 non-conference basketball loss Wednesday in the Trojan Trench.
The visitors used full-court pressure to make Triton play faster. Lady Trojan head coach Adam Heckaman said he anticipated as much, and planned for it.
Triton has struggled to score all season, and Wednesday was no different, though it wasn’t from lack of opportunity.
“We wanted to play fast and take advantage of opportunities, but we had to make sure we could think as fast as we could play, and we couldn’t,” Heckaman said. “I felt like we got what we wanted in the first couple of trips against (the press).
“But a few bobbled passes here, a few missed layups there, missing some open shots and then it just kind of snowballed. O-D made us play their game. We didn’t take advantage of the open shots they gave us, and if you can’t knock the open shots down, a lot of the time it turns into a turnover, and that’s what happened.”
The Lady Bobcats also enjoyed a significant advantage at the free throw line, making 17 of 25 from the charity stripe compared to Triton’s 1-of-9 effort.
“They drew a lot of fouls on us in our zone defense, and we didn’t draw very many on them in their aggressive, trapping defense. I suppose that’s us not moving our feet some, and maybe we need to play a little more aggressive on the defensive end and see if that works better for us,” Heckaman said.
It didn’t help that Triton’s lone senior, guard Quinn Downing, was in foul trouble most of the night. But ultimately, Triton did the necessary things to break the O-D press. The Lady Trojans just couldn’t collect the reward for the effort.
“Quinn getting two quick fouls hurt us, because she’s definitely the one we look to handle the ball a little bit more against pressure. So not having her out there hurt,” Heckaman said. “We don’t shoot the ball real well from the floor, and that hurts, also. We got a lot of open looks for a lot of kids; we just have to step up and knock them down.”
Oregon-Davis had four players in double figures, led by Jami Hurford’s 14 points and Leena Tetzloff’s 13. Hannah Wanemacher had a team-high 12 points for Triton.
The Lady Trojans (3-12 overall) return to Hoosier North Athletic Conference play Saturday when they host 2-12 West Central.
