The board of trustees voted unanimously Monday night to approve the schedule changes at its regular board meeting.
The e-learning days will take place on two Saturdays, April 22 and May 5. Students will access their assignments online and will have until the following Thursday to turn in the work. Teachers will determine the lesson plans and hours for the day.
The days are designed to make up for the four cancellations that WCS had due to weather.
Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert said accommodations will be made for students who don't have access to high-speed internet at home or may need more instruction.
According to a news release from WCS, with each student having a tablet is the WCS’s 1-to-1 program, it makes it possible for WCS to implement the e-learning days this year.
During last week’s board meeting, Chief Technology Officer Brad Hagg said there would be computer labs set up in the community to give access to students who don’t have access to internet at home.
Hoffert said some of the schools will set computer labs at some of the schools, and some local businesses will provide WiFi access as well. He said more details will be available as it gets closer to the days.
“The big thing to keep in mind is that the work does not have be done on Saturday,” he said. He said a student will be able to download the assignment packet and then take it home as an option as well.
In addition to the two days of e-learning, the board also approved adding two days to the end of the school year. The last day of school will be May 31.
More information about the e-learning days can be found on WCS’s website.
The board approved a proposal to advertise for bids for the upcoming cafeteria expansions at Eisenhower and Harrison elementary schools.
Brandon Penrod, chief financial officer, said companies will submit a bid for the expansion work.
Bids for the planned cafeteria expansion at Warsaw Community High School will be put out later.
“It’s a lot more intricate than we originally thought,” Penrod said. He added the project at WCHS is scheduled to begin this summer.
In other business, Amy Sivley, Lakeview Middle School principal, reported on the use of the grant to improve education at the school.
She said the school is in the second of a five-year grant from the Indiana Department of Education to “improve Lakeview.”
She said the money is being used to help teachers become certified to teach students who speak English as a second language and high-ability students.
Sivley said students have shown growth in math and language arts since they began implementing the programs.
She also said they’ve started doing enrichment nights, where the students come after school and do a “fun” math or language arts activity. The activities are optional and transportation is provided for the students.
