Walpole, Whitko Cash In At Charity Stripe

SOUTH WHITLEY – Peru did a lot of things better than Whitko Tuesday night, but the visiting Tigers sent the Wildcats to the free throw line early and often, and it proved profitable for the hosts in a 68-63 Three Rivers Conference boys basketball win Tuesday night.
Peru made nine more shots from the field than the Wildcats. Whitko coach Eli Henson said he wanted his team to drive to the hoop, and the result was the Tigers being called for 23 fouls, nearly double that of Whitko’s 12. The Wildcats cashed in by making 28 of 31 charity tosses.
Senior Nate Walpole led the parade to the charity stripe, missing just once in 19 attempts and finishing with 35 points in his last home game.
“It was a physical game, and I think the refs called about everything,” Henson said. “So I knew we had to get to the rim in the second half. We got good looks, but just didn’t knock them down.
“But we have a lot of guys who can penetrate and get those fouls, and we can rely on that when our shots aren’t falling. That’s huge for us to know we can get to the free throw line.”
Whitko made seven free throws to forge a one-point lead after the first quarter, and the game was tied at halftime and at the end of the third quarter. Walpole was 12 of 12 from the line in the decisive fourth quarter, and senior Alex Robbins knocked down a pair of free throws with 1.8 seconds left to secure the victory.
The win clinched third place in the TRC for Whitko with a 6-3 record, and the Wildcats improved to 13-7 overall. They will close out the regular season with games at Whitley County rival Churubusco on Saturday, and at Heritage on Feb. 25.
