AKRON – Close games have been the norm when Tippecanoe Valley and Maconaquah meet on the hardwood.
Tuesday’s game was no different.
In a Three Rivers Conference boys basketball clash that featured six ties and 11 lead changes, Valley led 34-33 going into the fourth quarter, but fell 46-40 to the visiting Braves.
Maconaquah improved to 10-6 overall and 7-0 in the TRC, while the Vikings fell to 7-12 and 3-5.
Valley beat the Braves 63-62 in Akron two years ago, while Maconaquah defended its home court with a 64-59 win in overtime last season.
In Tuesday’s game, the Braves led 13-12 after one quarter of play, 22-20 at halftime, and overcame Valley’s one-point advantage at the end of the third quarter by outscoring the Vikings 13-6 in the final frame.
Six-foot-8 senior Wyatt Hughes led Maconaquah with game-highs of 22 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Hughes was 7 of 12 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Chandler Pitts tallied 12 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists in the win, and was also 8 of 10 at the charity stripe.
As a team, Maconaquah was 16 of 21 at the free throw line, while the Vikings were 2 of 4.
For Valley, seniors Jarod Duzenbery and Alec Craig scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.
DeSean Heckman and Alex Morrison scored four points each in the loss, while Keith Wright and Wes Melanson chipped in with three points each.
Valley is in action again Friday at TRC foe North Miami, while Maconaquah looks to go 8-0 in league play when it hosts Southwood.
