Tyler Cooley, 33, Markle, is facing one charge of theft, a level 6 felony.
Police allege Cooley stole a total of $7,042 by withdrawing funds from the committee bank account, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office. The 3rd District covers about half of Kosciusko County.
Madalyn Sade-Bartl, chair of the district, said as soon as the district found it was missing money, they reported it to the police.
She said Cooley was elected as treasurer in February 2015 and resigned June 23, 2016, after he admitted to taking the money.
Noble County Sheriff’s Department began the investigation and handed it to the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office because the money was withdrawn from a Warsaw bank.
Sade-Bartl said Cooley had recently lost his job and had been unemployed for some time, but wasn’t sure exactly what he spent the money on.
She said he repaid $150 of it, but she was waiting to hear from the prosecutor whether to deposit the check.
“We’re glad this is finally going to court and hope we will get full restitution,” she said.
Cooley was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail Monday afternoon and has since been released.
