ALBION – Twenty, said Whitko High School girls basketball coach Brandon Bradley, is a nice round number.
The Class 2A No. 2 Lady Wildcats tallied their school-record 20th win this season Tuesday night with a 74-35 dismantling of Fremont in first-round action of Sectional 35 at Central Noble.
A win Saturday night, however, remains the goal – a victory that would secure the program’s first sectional championship.
“That’s not our goal, but at the same time if you think about 40-plus years of basketball at the high school, that’s something that people can’t take away from them unless somebody beats it,” Bradley said of the 20th win. “It’s kind of cool ... 20 is a nice round number. We’re hoping to keep adding to that, if possible.
“They’ll be excited about it when we tell them (about the record), but they’ve been great about taking it one game at a time this year, not even focusing on it.”
With Tuesday’s 39-point win over the Lady Eagles (8-15), Whitko (20-4) advanced to Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal against LaVille (10-12).
Prairie Heights (5-17) and No. 10 Central Noble (22-2) play tonight at 6 p.m., followed by Westview (12-9) and Bremen (15-8). Tonight’s winners play in a semifinal game at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Whitko scored the first seven points of the game Tuesday and raced out to a 14-3 lead.
The Lady Eagles were within eight, 25-17, in the second quarter, but Whitko took complete control with a 21-2 run that included the final 13 points of the first half.
Whitko led 38-17 at the break and 59-32 after three quarters of play.
“We’ve done things like that throughout the year,” Bradley said of his team taking control with the 21-2 run. “It’s simple, when we play consecutive possessions defensively with discipline, and when we play consecutive possessions offensively where we’re getting easy baskets and working for easy baskets instead of settling for long jumpers or settling for contested shots, we’ve had some really good runs in games this year.
“We’ve had some really good runs this year in games where  for 4, 5, 6, 8, even 10 minutes we’ve put possession after possession together like that. It’s really good for us.”
Fremont turned the ball over 28 times, compared to Whitko’s 11 turnovers.
Senior Aly Reiff led the Lady Wildcats with a game-high 27 points. At one point in the third quarter, Reiff and Fremont were tied with 23 points.
Senior Hanna Yohe scored 15 points in the win, while freshman Brielle Harrison chipped in with nine points and seniors Kennedy Krull and Haley Yohe finished with seven each.
Senior Lexi Lyon paced Fremont with 13 points, while sophomore Bella Dangerfield and freshman Samantha Kuhn scored eight and six points, respectively.
