The family of Avis B. Gunter would like to wish her a very happy 90th birthday.

Avis was born Jan. 7, 1928, to Avery and Lucy Leckrone Kimes of Claypool.  She was raised on Kimes family farm, where she still lives, and graduated from Claypool High School. On May 25, 1946, she married Everett “Red” Gunter. They were married nearly 54 years; Red died April 9, 2000.

Avis was a farmer's wife and milked 40 Ayrshire cows night and morning until she became the second deputy in the Kosciusko County Assessor's Office.  She served the people of Kosciusko County for 43 years, including as Kosciusko County assessor for 21 years and a Kosciusko County commissioner for 12 years.

Avis and Red were the parents of Hal J. Gunter, Claypool, and Ava Gunter Gore, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Her clan also includes five grandchildren: Gretchen Gunter Bailey (Joshua), Claypool; Gwen Gunter Fuller (Nathan), Houston, Texas; Erin Hudson Ziel (Ryan), Deerfield Beach, Fla.; Avriana J. Gore, Fort Lauderdale; and L. Thomas Everett Gore, Fort Lauderdale.

“Gram” is the nanny and taxi service for three of her five great-grandchildren — Kellan, Rogan  and Teagan — and also plays basketball and baseball with them. Franklyn  and Brinley of Houston are her other grandchildren.

The family is getting together for a family picture Jan. 6.

An open house is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Claypool United Methodist Church fellowship hall, 302 E. Section St., Claypool. The public is invited.
