Tigers Rally, But Fall Short To 2A No. 2 Westview

TOPEKA – Doug Ogle said he was encouraged by the way his team played in the middle two quarters of Saturday night’s non-conference game at Class 2A No. 2 Westview.

Warsaw’s veteran boys basketball coach, however, is still looking for consistency from his squad, which fell to 3-6 on the season following a 57-50 loss to the undefeated Warriors (8-0).

The Tigers trailed 18-4 after one quarter of play, but outscored Westview 14-0 in the second stanza to force a tie at halftime, and then led 31-29 heading into the final frame.

“I don’t know if we could have had a worse start to the game,” said Ogle. “The second quarter we outscored them 14-0 and tied it up, and then the third quarter was OK.

“It was just a combination of things. We had some defensive breakdowns in the fourth quarter. We had some offensive miscues, and just turnovers and bad shots.

“I’ll tell you, Westview is a handful to defend. The combination of (Charlie) Yoder, (Elijah) Hales and (Nick) Rensberger is pretty darn good. The combination of those three guys was really good tonight. We did a good job to get back in the game, we really did. The second and third quarter was kind of encouraging, but the start of the game and the last four minutes ... we’re disappointed.”

Saturday’s game, the first regular season meeting between the two programs, was just the third meeting overall and the first since a clash in the 1989 regional at North Side Gym in Elkhart. The contest featured 10 lead changes and four ties.

Sophomore Brian Elliott gave the Tigers a 33-32 lead in the fourth quarter – Warsaw’s final lead of the game – with a pair of free throws, but Westview responded with a 9-0 run and later salted the game away at free throw line.

The Warriors, who made eight three-pointers to Warsaw’s three treys, converted 17 of 21 free throw attempts (all in the second half) to the Tigers’ 11 of 14.

“Warsaw deserves credit (for getting back in the game),” said Westview coach Rob Yoder. “Give our kids credit, too, because a rivalry game (Friday night) with (Lakeland), and then we have to bounce back ... I think were just in a little bit of a tough spot there ... and have enough energy to play four quarters.

“I guess we just decided to take the second quarter off, but we played pretty hard the other three.”

Yoder, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, led Westview with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists, while 6-4 junior Hales tallied 17 points, six assists and five boards.

For Warsaw, 6-foot junior Nolan Groninger led the way with 21 points, seven assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Senior Zach Riley scored 10 points in the loss, while junior Jaylen Reese and Elliott chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively.

Warsaw is back in action Dec. 30 in the Champions of Character Classic at Grace College.

The Tigers will play Zionsville and Fishers in the four-team format, which also features Valparaiso.

Westview, who has wins over Northern Lakes Conference schools NorthWood, Northridge and Warsaw, plays NLC member Plymouth in the DeKalb Classic on Thursday.

Warsaw won Saturday’s JV game 56-33.

Blake Marsh was 8 of 10 from the field and led the Tigers with 16 points, while Wyatt Amiss chipped in with 12 points.
