Wawasee Upsets No. 9 Central Noble
By Staff Report-
The Lady Cougars’ two best scorers coming into the game were Sydney Freeman at 19 points a game and Meleah Leatherman at 17 points per contest. Wawasee’s defense held Leatherman to nine points and Freeman to seven, and no Central Noble player reached double figures in scoring.
“Tonight was one of those prototypical team efforts,” Lady Warrior coach Matt Carpenter said. “Defensively we had to be really good tonight, and Casey Schroeder did an outstanding job holding Freeman to seven points, and she’s one of the better players in northern Indiana. Leatherman is about a 1,000-point scorer, and Hannah-Marie Lamle was outstanding on her.
“The girls executed the game plan really well tonight, and were able to withstand a couple of runs Central Noble put on us and finish.”
After leading 21-16 at halftime, Wawasee trailed the Lady Cougars 30-29 heading into the final period. Kabrea Rostochak hit a three-pointer in the fourth quarter, and Lamle had a couple of buckets before the heroics from the charity stripe from Kuhn and Schroeder.
“They made some clutch shots for us, and stepped up with confidence,” Carpenter said of his team. “They took advantage of the opportunity. We were aggressive down the stretch in getting to the hoop and the free throw line, then took advantage when we got there. I’m really proud of them.”
In the junior varsity matchup, Danielle Jenkins had 11 points and Madison Mottern eight for the Lady Warriors in their 34-30 loss to Central Noble.
Next up for Wawasee (7-6) is the Plymouth Classic on Dec. 30. The Lady Warriors face Indianapolis Brebeuf Jesuit (2-8) at 11:45 a.m. in the second semifinal. Norwell (8-4) plays the host Lady Pilgrims (6-6) in the first game. The third place game will be at 6 p.m. that evening, with the championship contest following at about 7:45.
