Just about everything went right for the host Lady Tigers in the first two quarters.
The third and fourth quarters, well, that was a different story, as the Lady Knights overcame an 18-point deficit and beat the Lady Tigers 54-50.
In a non-conference clash at the Tiger Den, Warsaw shot 60 percent from the field in the first half and led 37-19 at one point in the third quarter.
After scoring just 12 points in the first 16 minutes of the game, Norwell exploded offensively after the intermission, going on a 17-3 run and outscoring Warsaw 42-24.
“The first thing we talked about in the locker room, I told the kids ‘this one is on me,’” said first-year Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs, whose team fell to 9-4, while Norwell improved to 8-4.
“I told the kids Norwell started hitting some outside shots and beat us ... it was my fault because we were protecting the paint. I?should have made some adjustments a little bit sooner. With that being said, we have to learn how to continue to pressure the basketball. If you go back to the first half, we had great ball pressure and we were able to close out shooters.
“We’re going to go back and look at things, and we’re gonna learn. But, I’m proud of these kids. Not very many people expected us to be 9-4 going into the break and competing the way we did. You go back to the first half, and I thought we dominated the game. Unfortunately for us, the game is 32 minutes long.”
The Lady Tigers were 9 of 15 from the field in the first half, while Norwell was 4 of 14.
The Lady Knights flipped the script in the second half, making 15 of 28 attempts, including five three-pointers, while Warsaw was just 8 of 26 from the field after halftime.
Warsaw, playing its second of four straight home games, led 10-7 after on quarter of play, 26-12 at halftime and 41-33 going into the final frame.
Norwell tied the game at 44 on a bucket by sophomore Breann Barger with 4:55 remaining.
The Lady Tigers responded by scoring the next four points, only to see the Lady Knights knot the game at 48.
Norwell took a 49-48 lead with 2:13 to play when junior Aubrey Dunnuck made the first of two free throw attempts, giving the Lady Knights their first lead since the early stages of the first quarter.
A pair of Dunnuck free throws pushed Norwell’s advantage to 51-48 with 1:05 to play.
Warsaw trimmed the deficit to two on a bucket by junior Maddie Ryman.
Senior Logan Rowles pushed the Lady Knights’ advantage to 53-50 with 21 seconds remaining. She was fouled on the play, but missed the free throw, leaving the door open for the Lady Tigers.
With five ticks on the clock, Warsaw junior Halle Shipp made a move on the perimeter but was whistled for a traveling violation.
Forced to foul, the Lady Tigers put freshman Maiah Shelton at the line, where she iced the game by hitting the second of two charity tosses with three seconds left.
The Lady Knights, who turned the ball over 29 times in their last game, committed 16 turnovers Friday.
Warsaw turned the ball over 18 times – 12 in the second half – and it led to 19 points for Norwell.
“Penn, Carroll, they turned the pressure up on us, too, and when teams do that we don’t do a good job of making good decisions under pressure,” said Krebs. “That’s something we have to get better at. As the leader of this group, that’s on me, and I’ll continue to work with these kids and we’ll get better.
“I thought we handled pressure longer in this game than we did earlier in the year. We’re going to focus on some positives, fix negatives, and go from there.”
Ryman led the Lady Tigers with 17 points, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore Kaylee Patton tallied 10 points and four assists.
Senior Kacy Bragg chipped in with eight points and four boards in the loss, and sophomore Brielle Harrison finished with six points and eight rebounds.
Norwell was led Brielle Wilson’s 12 points and six rebounds. Barger added eight points and four boards, Rowles seven points and seven rebounds, and Dunnuck seven points.
Warsaw is in action again Wednesday when it hosts the annual Lady Tiger Tournament.
The Lady Tigers play Mishawaka at 10 a.m., while Chesterton and Perry Meridian play in the second semifinal.
The consolation game is slated for 6 p.m., followed by the title tilt at approximately 8 p.m.
In Friday’s JV game, Warsaw beat Norwell 37-26.
Kensie Ryman led the JV Lady Tigers with 13 points, while Audrey Grimm chipped in with 10 points.
