WATERFORD MILLS – Bethany Christian got off to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter, and visiting Whitko could only cut the lead to four before falling 47-37 in a non-conference girls basketball loss Thursday night.

“We got off to a slow start, which was disappointing," said Whitko coach Rick Bragg. "We had some costly turnovers early, missed our first 10 shots and were outplayed. Unfortunately the slow start ended up being the difference in the game."

The Lady ‘Cats made a run midway through the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 36-32, but could get no closer.

"We had a tough call on a charge that took away a basket, then had a couple costly turnovers," Bragg said. "Nevertheless, our effort and hard work got us back in the game and put us in a position to try and win the game.

"The hope is that this can be a learning experience in that we have to be ready to play at the start of a game and that when we make that extra effort we can compete."

Sarah Hewitt led Whitko with 11 points. Kayla Schlipper had nine points and Ellie Snep just missed a double-double with nine points and 16 rebounds.

In the junior varsity game, Whitko got 14 points from Audrey Bradford and 12 from Carissa Beck in its 45-43 win over the Lady Bruins. Gus Garr had eight points and Lily Owsley had seven in the game.

Whitko (1-13) is right back at it tonight, hosting Oregon-Davis in a non-conference game.
