Warsaw Tops NLC Rival Wawasee

SYRACUSE – It wasn’t hard for Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter to find the turning point in the Lady Warriors’ 43-33 loss to visiting Warsaw in their Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball game Saturday night.

Both teams were playing solid defense, with Wawasee holding a 6-4 lead 10 minutes into the game. Neither team scored over the next two minutes, then everything fell apart for Wawasee.

The Lady Warriors committed eight turnovers in four minutes. Some were a result of solid Warsaw defense, but most were simply Wawasee mistakes. It put Wawasee in a hole, trailing 17-6 at halftime, from which it couldn’t climb out.

“There was a four-minute stretch to end the first half where we turned the ball over,” said Carpenter. “They specifically got 10 or 11 points from the last four or five turnovers. That’s the basketball game. And what I can’t get the girls to understand is that we can’t afford to give away those possessions.”

“Warsaw’s a strong, physical team. But when your getting bodied, the refs aren’t going to call anything unless you’re going (baseline-to-baseline), get some dribble penetration and put them in a spot where they have to call a foul. When we play passive on the perimeter and just throw the ball away, that’s all on us.”

Wawasee did trim the lead to six, 23-17,  late in the third quarter. But Warsaw’s Maddie Ryman drained a three just before the buzzer, and Kaylee Patton nailed another trey on the first possession of the fourth period to restore the lead to 12. The margin ballooned to 17 before Wawasee made a final run.

Warsaw coach Lenny Krebs was less than satisfied with his team’s offensive performance in the first 12 minutes of the game. The Lady Tigers were scoreless the first 6:22 of the game, leaving Krebs feeling fortunate that his team didn’t find itself trying to come from behind.

“No one wants to go on the road in a conference game and not put points on the board early,” Krebs said. “In that first quarter we didn’t put points on the board the way we should have. We were timid and playing a little bit scared. We were playing back on our heels early. Wawasee came out and were the aggressors early on.

“Fortunately for us, they didn’t hit more shots.”

He was less unhappy about the Lady Tiger defense. The overall result was good, but Wawasee was able to put together a pair of stretches where Warsaw was reeling, if only momentarily.

“Anytime you hold a team to 33, you have to be happy,” Krebs said. “I think we’ll go back and watch this film and we’ll see a lot of room for improvement, just in how we play defensively.”

Patton finished with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Halle Shipp came off the bench and scored nine points, with Ryman and Kacy Bragg scoring eight points each.

Casey Schroeder paced the Lady Warriors with 14 points, despite twice taking an elbow to the nose that forced her to leave the game. Hannah Lancaster had seven points.

The Lady Tigers rolled to a 34-13 win over Wawasee in the junior varsity game. Audrey Grimm had 12 points for Warsaw, and Madison Mottern scored six for the Lady Warriors.

Warsaw improved to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Lady Tigers will host Triton Tuesday night. Wawasee fell to 6-6 (0-3 NLC) and hosts 2A No. 9 Central Noble Friday night.
