John William Ramsey Sr., 78, Akron, died at 9:25 a.m. Dec. 15, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1939, in rural Fulton County to Verlin and Mabel Hartzler Ramsey. He lived his entire life in the Akron area.

He graduated from Akron High School in 1957.

On Feb. 24, 1958, he married Midge Jernigan Ramsey by the Rev. Harold Conrad at the Akron Church of God. She preceded him in death on March 31, 2009.

He was owner and operator of O & R Buildings Inc., beginning in 1965, and was still active in day-to-day operations.

He was a farmer and construction worker. He enjoyed watching college basketball on TV. Some of his favorite sports teams were the Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers and whoever played against Notre Dame.

Survivors include four children: Deborah Ramsey, John W. Ramsey, Jr. (Penny) Ramsey, Verlin (Beverly) Ramsey, Mark (Nancy) Ramsey, all of Akron; one brother, Charles “Chuck” Ramsey and special friend Dixie Arter, of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren: Angela (Ryan) Parson, Akron; Kent (Kelli) Ramsey, Akron; Shawna (Nick) Stutzman, Fort Wayne; Verlin (Crystal) Ramsey, Fort Wayne; Daniel (Meghan) Ramsey, Pierceton; Adam Ramsey and fiancée Taylor Peterson, Akron; Tabby Ramsey, Indianapolis; one stepgrandson, Travis (Aylssa) Ramsey, Rochester; 15 great-grandchildren and one to be born in January.

He was preceded in death by is parents; his wife, Midge; his sister, Eloise Hoehn; his brother, Jim Ramsey; and step-granddaughter, Amanda Ramsey

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec, 19 at the Earl-Love Funeral Home, Akron.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20 at the funeral home. Pastor David Eaton, of Akron United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Burial will be at Akron IOOF Cemetery, Akron.
