Dr. Richard Eugene Jeffreys, Warsaw, passed away at 5:12 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne, at the age of 75. He was surrounded by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who sang and prayed as he was ushered from this life to the next.

He was born July 2, 1942, in Uniontown, Pa., to Robert Earl Jeffreys and Mary Jane Cooley Jeffreys.  On Aug. 28, 1965, he was married in Morgantown, W. Va., to Kathy J. Becilla Jeffreys, who survives.

He had a love of learning and earned his bachelor’s degree, his master’s degree and received his PhD in biochemistry from West Virginia University. Richard moved to Kosciusko County in 1975 and retired as a professor and chair of the biology department from Grace College and Seminary in Winona Lake, after 40 years teaching hundreds of students. He was a member of Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, enjoyed gardening, walking and most of all he loved his family.  

Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Kathy J. Jeffreys, Warsaw; son, Dwight D. (Leslie) Jeffreys, Warsaw; and his daughter, Rachel M. (Jeff) Grose.  He also leaves behind seven grandchildren (all of Warsaw): Lucas (Emily) Grose; Derek, Jack and Lauren Grose; Kyrsta (Adam) Lenon; Andrew (Hannah) Jeffreys; Brenna Jeffreys; four great-grandchildren: Daniel, Jacob and Oliver Lenon; and Alden Jeffreys; and three brothers: Robert E. (Sandy) Jeffreys Jr., Hopewell, Va.; Edward D. (Barbara) Jeffreys, Vero Beach, Fla.; Daniel L. (Sheila) Jeffreys, West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017, from 2  to 4 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw. There will also be viewing an hour prior to the service at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, from 9 to 10 a.m.

His funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2017, at Winona Lake Grace Brethren Church, 1200 Kings Highway, Winona Lake, and officiated by Pastor Bruce Barlow. A private family graveside service will take place at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
