No. 4 Valley Cruises To Win At Triton

BOURBON – Tippecanoe Valley came out and played like a team worthy of Class 3A’s No. 4 ranking, and in turn Triton struggled to get anything going on offense.

The end result was a 44-25 Valley victory in a non-conference girls basketball game at the Trojan Trench Wednesday night.

The Lady Vikings came out in a full-court press and a man-to-man defense that caused all kinds of problems for the host Lady Trojans. Triton had two shots on its first possession, but turned the ball over each of the next four trips down the floor.

Ten minutes into the game and trailing 13-2, Triton coach Adam Heckaman subbed out all five of his starters in an attempt to motivate his team to increase its effort.

“We weren’t playing hard. The play I sent five out on, Valley gets a steal, the kid bobbles it out on the wing, we get someone out to guard her and four Valley kids are in the paint,” he said. “To me, that’s just unacceptable. It’s just not any effort.

“Five kids came off the bench, they moved the ball around on offense, got some good looks, defensively they got a couple of stops, but that wasn’t a lineup that could handle the press, so we went back to the first group, and I thought that first group played a little harder, moved the ball a little bit better then, and they started to act like they wanted to be out there.”

Heckaman sent his starters back in the game with 3:15 left before halftime, and they managed a couple of baskets in the time left. Still, Valley took a 23-7 lead into the locker room.

“We felt like coming into the game we could pressure them a little bit,” Lady Viking coach Chris Kindig said. “Anytime you hold a team to seven points in the first half,  you’re getting the job done defensively. We didn’t give them a lot of open looks, especially in the first half.

“We passed the ball well. We had some really good interior passing against that zone. That zone they run can be really bothersome because it forces you to the outside. But we did a good job of attacking  and getting some easy baskets.”

Addy Miller hit four three-pointers for Valley, finishing with a game-high 14 points. Sophie Bussard had seven of her 10 points in the decisive first half, as well as five of her six rebounds, also a game-high. Jillian Walls had nine points in the winning effort.

“Overall, I’m pleased with our effort,” Kindig said. “I told the girls we still need to put together four quarters. We got 3-1/2 tonight, and I thought we let up a little bit in the fourth quarter, but for the most part I’m pleased with the way we played tonight.”

Hannah Wanemacher finished with 11 points for Triton, with Whytnie Miller scoring six, and Nichole Sechrist and Chelsea Johnson four points each for the Lady Trojans.

Valley won the junior varsity game 33-26 over Triton. Sidney Wagner had 11 points and Walls nine for the Lady Vikings. Seven players scored for Triton, led by Alyxa Viers with 10 points.

Triton (5-7) returns to Hoosier North Athletic Conference play Saturday night, hosting Caston. Valley (9-1) plays at North Miami in a Three Rivers Conference match-up Friday night in Denver.
