Lady Tigers' Rally Falls Short At Carroll

December 7, 2017 at 5:09 p.m.

HUNTERTOWN – The Warsaw Lady Tigers didn’t get the win they were looking for. First-year coach Lenny Krebs, however, got the response he wanted.

With his team in a big hole Wednesday evening at Carroll High School, Krebs called a second-half timeout and challenged his players.

The Lady Tigers, who trailed by 20 points after three quarters of play, responded in a big way, cutting the deficit to six before falling 56-48.

A pair of three-pointers by sophomore Kaylee Patton trimmed what had been a 22-point deficit at one point in the third quarter down to 10 with 3:14 remaining in the game.

A trey from junior Halle Shipp trimmed Carroll’s advantage to 54-47.

With 2:00 remaining, senior Emma Bohnenkamper made 1 of 2 charity tosses.

The Lady Chargers scored the only two points the rest of the way and staved off Warsaw’s rally.

Both teams are now 6-3 on the season.

Though disappointed with the loss, Krebs was happy with the way his team fought back.

“I’m proud of the kids, they didn’t give up,” said Krebs. “We have a game we play in practice ... I put our kids down 20 or 25 points and we put 10 minutes on the clock and let it run.

“We call it black/white, and it’s a game where we’re full-court pressing and trying to get after it, simulating this type of thing.

“We called the timeout with about seven and a half minutes to go, and we told them we’re gonna go play black/white like we do in practice. They got after it and we cut it to six, made it a two-possession game. We just have to become more consistent, that’s the word we used in the locker room, with our intensity level, our passion, our energy, our focus ... all those things that kind of waivered a little bit, especially in the middle two quarters.

“But I’m proud of the kids, they got after it. We just have to learn now not to panic.”

Carroll led 11-8 after one quarter of play, 28-19 at halftime and 47-27 at the end of the third quarter.

The hosts hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first half, and then used a 13-0 run near the end of the third quarter to stretch their lead.

Carroll finished the game 21 of 44 (48 percent) from the field overall, 8 of 15 from the arc, and 6 of 11 at the free three line.

Senior Kelli Damman led the Lady Chargers with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while classmate Laney Steckler scored 16 points.

The duo combined to make 13 of 20 shots overall and 5 of 6 three-point attempts.

Warsaw was led by the 19-point performance of senior Emma Bohnenkamper, who added six rebounds to her career-high scoring effort.

Patton finished with nine points and five boards, and sophomore Brielle Harrison chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.

Warsaw was 15 of 45 (33 percent) from the field overall, 3 of 14 from three-point range, and 15 of 23 at the charity stripe.

The Lady Tigers are back in action Saturday when they open Northern Lakes Conference play at Plymouth.

“This is the kind of game we wanted before conference play, to get tested and see where we’re at,” said Krebs. “Give Carroll credit, they’re a nice ball club. They played (defending state champion) Homestead to a one-point game. We’re gonna take some confidence from this that we can play with them.”

Carroll won the junior varsity game 30-18.

Kendall Wayne and Madelyn Smith led the JV Lady Tigers with five points each.
